A five-part referendum was held in Melite between 14–15 May 2022. Voters were asked questions on confidence in President Matthew Tonna, support for the government's socio-economic policies and early elections for both the presidency and parliament. The referendum was initiated by the Parliament of Melite through Act 4/2022 on General Issues in Melite,[1] which was approved by a vote of 9 in favour against 1 against.[a] A person could choose to not vote, but if he/she participated in the referendum, there could not be any abstentions to any question, therefore, no question could be skipped. This referendum was inspired by the 1993 Russian referendum which also put similar questions to the electorate.

Electoral Commission

On 26 April 2022, the President of Melite, Matthew Tonna, through decree 9/2022 "on the Appointment of Electoral Commissioners", appointed Simeon Nikolov and Eoin O'Lachtna, as electoral commissioners for five years with the duty to conduct and safeguard the validity of elections in Melite.[2] Both took their Oath of Office after each other, minutes after they were appointed.[3]
