The 2018 Abeldane GUM referendum was a referendum in Abelden asking whether or not the Abeldane Empire should leave the Grand Unified Micronational, which the empire had been a member of since its reformation in 2016. In total 51 people voted, 27 in favour of leaving and 23 against. The referendum passed with 54.9% in support, granting the government the power to leave the organization.

Background

Discussion on leaving the GUM had been a growing factor within the newly elected Shiro government following its inauguration on 24 December 2017. Shiro and his United Rhinoceros Party, alongside its coalition partner the National Federalist Party of Alejandro Whyatt had been sceptical to GUM membership for a long time, and had run on a platform to leave the organisation.

Campaign

Campaigning ahead of the referendum started quickly after the announcement of the referendum. The National Federalist Party and Alejandro Whyatt stood at the front of the leaf campaign, whereas the stay campaign had no concentrated campaign.

Aftermath

Following the referendum, the Shiro government announced the Abeldane Empire’s withdrawal from the Grand Unified Micronational. Abelden would however rejoin the organization 2 years later, after the 2020 GUM membership referendum reversed the results from 2018.
