Adammic-Austenasian relations

Adammia

Austenasia
Envoy
Emperor of Adammia, Adam I Emperor of Austenasia, Jonathan I

The Empires of Adammia and Austenasia are close diplomatic partners, with both nations formally recognising each other as sovereign since 2018, and recognising each other as holding imperium since 2020. Both nations are long-standing members of the Grand Unified Micronational, where they frequently collaborate, and the Emperors of both nations are eleventh cousins and are close personal allies within the micronational community.

History

Informal relations (2013 - 2018)

Austenasia is the older of the two empires, having been founded in September 2008; by the time Adammia was founded by Emperor Adam I in April 2013, Austenasia was ruled by its fourth and current monarch, Emperor Jonathan I. Adammia made informal contact with Austenasia within weeks of its foundation, and it was Austenasia which originally forwarded Adammia's application for provisional membership of the Grand Unified Micronational in May 2013. Adammia formally recognised Austenasia as sovereign through Emperor Adam's thirteenth Imperial Decree on 7 September 2013. However, due to the imperium doctrine, Austenasia would be reluctant to formally recognise Adammia for several years. Due to their work together in the GUM, Adam I and Austenasian prime minister Brooklyn Hewitt became personal allies in the community, and she advocated for Austenasian recognition of Adammia during her time in government. On 4 June 2017, Emperor Adam I was made a Member of the Austenasian Order.

On 23 May 2018, Adammia and Austenasia finally signed a mutual recognition treaty, although its terms exempted Austenasia from referring to Adam I as an Emperor. The exemption caused some debate amongst the Ruling Council as to whether to accept the terms, with Adammic prime minister Lord Helliker suggesting that the refusal to recognise Adam I as an Emperor was insulting, but the Council ultimately decided that Adammia had little to lose and backed the treaty. Austenasia would treat Adam I as a head of state and a monarch, but would avoid using the title of Emperor. Nonetheless, shortly afterwards the two nations would exchange diplomatic gifts as a sign of goodwill: Emperor Adam I was named Duke of Deira in the Austenasian peerage on 4 June 2018, and Emperor Jonathan was made a Knight of the Order of the Meerkat on the same day.

The two emperors met in-person for the first time on 15 September 2018 when Adam I visited Wrythe as part of Austenasia's tenth Independence Day celebrations, where the two signed the Wrythe Convention. It was the first time that Emperor Adam I had been received in a foreign nation as a state visit. On the same day, Adam I was upgraded to the rank of Imperial Knight in the Austenasian Order (IKA). However, criticism of Austenasia by various Adammic politicians throughout 2019, particularly over Austenasia's prohibition of same-sex marriage, created tension between the two nations. Adammic politicians from all parties, and especially the governing Storm Party, wanted Adammia to withdraw its recognition of Austenasia, and called on Emperor Adam to resign his Austenasian titles. The Ruling Council passed a motion condemning Austenasia, and Emperor Jonathan gave a statement in response seeking to rebuke the Storm Party claims. Eventually, however, this tension would calm down. Some months later, Adammic PM Lord Saunders would have a chance encounter with Austenasian PM Hewitt in a Nolland-based Facebook Messenger chat, which helped to defuse tensions somewhat. On 28 June 2019, the two Emperors would effectively co-host the 2019 GUM Birmingham Summit, with Emperor Adam I as Chair of the GUM and Emperor Jonathan I as an Associate Justice.

A new trilateral treaty between Adammia, Austenasia and the Wyvernian Holy Roman Empire came into force on 1 January 2020, under which Austenasia finally recognised Adam I's claim to the rank of Emperor. On 14 August 2021, the two Emperors met again as part of a trilateral meeting which also included the Prime Minister of Lundenwic, Mike Lewis. On 20 September 2022, Emperor Adam I was made Knight Companion of the Glorious Order of St. John, the highest chivalric honour in Austenasia. On 5 November 2022, Adam I served as a groomsman at the Wedding of Jonathan I and Princess Hannah of Wildflower Meadows. As a wedding gift to the married couple, he made them both Knight and Dame Commanders of the Order of Adammia respectively; he also made Emperor Father Terry a Knight of the Order of the Meerkat, and Emperor Mother Margaret and Crown Princess Caroline Dames of the Order of Adammia.

The two Emperors most recently met at the GUM summit in East Dulwich on 3 December 2022.
