An air marshal is an air officer of the Baustralian Armed Forces, more specifically, His Royal Air Force. It outranks a major general of the army, a rear admiral of the navy, and an air vice marshal of the air force. Its equivalent is a vice admiral of the navy, and a lieutenant general of the army. It is outranked by a general of the army, an admiral of the navy, and an air chief marshal of the air force.
Air marshals usually take the post of Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, and only one is appointed at a time.
