The April 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election was held from 10 to 11 February 2021.
It resulted in a Georgienstine First victory, despite the party seeing minor losses. The SLP/LDP joint list's support stayed relatively stable. The Social Democratic Party ran its own list this time and had good results. The Liberal Party suffered major losses, due to the Social Democratic Party having run its own list, taking away the support both parties had when they had run a joint list.
Background
The February 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election resulted in Georgienstine First becoming the majority party after Social Democratic congressman, James Mark caucused with them. The Social Democratic Party had run a joint list with the Liberal Party, but they broke off hours after the election. The Liberal Party had planned to caucus with the Socialist Labour Party after negotiations with Georgienstine First had failed and this led James Mark to caucus with Georgienstine First giving the party a majority.
On 22 February 2021, congressperson Gaia Grìbhinneach resigned and was replaced by Saionji Kintsune. Grìbhinneach was elected once again to the National Congress in April.
On 23 February 2021, Owen O'Lachtna was elected speaker defeating Logan White 9-6, one congressman abstained. During her tenure as speaker, O'Lachtna was considered inactive as he had only confirmed eight nominees for different cabinet positions and held only one hearing. Nominee for Secretary of Energy, Raphaël Olivier remained unconfirmed. A poll released by the Georgienstine News Corporation showed that 91% of the electorate believed that the National Congress had not been active enough and 36% said it was the most important issue for the election.
On 16 March 2021, speaker Owen O'Lachtna joined the Social Democratic Party.
On 5 April 2021, Georgienstine First congressman Logan White left the party to form the big tent Independent Movement of Georgienstine. The party was short-lived as it merged into the Social Democratic party one day later.
Electoral system and organization
The National Congress is composed of 16 seats elected by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with a legal threshold of 1 full seat (6.25%), and residuals assigned by the D’Hondt method.
Campaign
Georgienstine First released numerous posters and so did President Raphaël Olivier's re-election campaign. Olivier also held one rally in Castel.
The Socialist Labour Party also released numerous posters attacking the president and Georgienstine First. The party largely spoke about the climate emergency.
