The Baltic Union (also Baltic Micronational Community, Russian: Балтийский Союз, Latvian: Baltijas Savienība, Estonian: Balti Liit, Lithuanian: Baltų Sąjunga) is a regional micronational organization that aims to develop cultural, economic and political ties between the micronations of the Baltic States, the Baltic coast and Northwestern Rus'.

The first pan-Baltic organization founded through the mediation of the Government of Esgeldia and the Baltic micronational countries on December 31, 2021

History

Title page of the Baltic Charter

The idea of creating a pan-baltic micronational organization was first voiced in the republican era of Esgeldia by ex-President Aleksandr Kuzmin against the background of a short-term warming of relations with Waldreich in the fall of 2020. Unfortunately, it was not possible to implement this concept due to another crisis in relations between Waldreich and Esgeldia in 2020, as well as the general isolationist policy of the government of the Third Esgeldian Republic regarding micronations outside the Russian-speaking world.

The final and gradual restoration of diplomatic relations with the Waldreich Empire in September–December 2021 gave a second wind to an idea already seemingly forgotten forever. Despite the poor relations between the Baltic and Slavic peoples in real politics, the Esgeldian government still believed in the possibility of joint activities of the Baltic and Slavic peoples based on the principles of friendship and mutual respect.

Looking back at the glorious images of the past - the activities of the Polotsk Principality for the baptism of the Baltic peoples a couple of decades before the start of the Fourth Crusade, as well as the trade cooperation of the first Livonian Order and the Hansa with the principalities of Northwestern Rus' (Novgorod and Pskov, given that Esgeldia de-jure considers itself the successor of the latter), Alexander Kuzmin decided to single-handedly start searching for other Baltic micronations outside the Russian-speaking world.

The first contact was established with the Ambassador of Western Latgale in Riga Richard Works on December 21, 2021 at the site of the Discord media network. During the negotiations, which lasted from December 21 to 23, the countries recognized each other at an informal level, and Aleksandr Kuzmin himself, having received honorary citizenship of Western Latgale, attracted the President of Saema of Western Latgale Roberts Bruolinš and the previously mentioned Waldreich diplomats, who had been watching the esgeldian searches with interest, to search for other Baltic micronations.

By the joint efforts of the diplomats of Esgeldia, Waldreich, and Western Latgale, by December 26, communication was established with the Estonian micronations and their representatives - Sander II Koff from the Kingdom of Revalia and Johannes I M. Toome from the Great Kingdom of Slitronia.

The main provisions of the Charter of the Baltic Union were discussed in a hastily organized "Provisional Baltic Assembly" from December 26 to December 30. The result of these debates, during which even a situation arose that could lead to the breakdown of all negotiations (fortunately, quickly overcome), was the signing of the Charter of the Baltic Union on December 31, 2021 - the day of the first anniversary of the founding of the League of Independent States in the Russian-speaking micronational community, also on the initiative of esgeldian diplomats and with similar goals.

On the same day, through the efforts of Western Latgale, the Lithuanian micronation of Dutloria was discovered, the connection with which was established through a diplomatic letter sent to representatives of Dutloria from the Tsar of Esgeldia with an official invitation to the Baltic Union and a link to the official BU discord-server. On January 2, 2022, already during the Christmas holidays, the official Baltic Assembly unanimously adopted the Republic of Dutloria as the sixth member of the Baltic Union.

The activities of the Baltic diplomats also attracted the attention of the Ambassador of Užupis in Chicago, James Murray, who joined the discord server of the Baltic Union on the same day. However, this was an exclusively private initiative and it is not yet possible to talk about the membership of the Republic of Užupis in the Baltic Union.

The period of further expansion of the Baltic Union fell on the micronations of Latvia and Lithuania - and although the adoption of Korginia was repeatedly criticized by the Estonian delegates of the BU for their amateurishness and inconstancy (as a result, their fears were justified), on February 8, 2022, the Baltic Union was replenished with another Latvian micronation in the person of the Republic of Ambestan, existing in various forms since 2018 and actually being one of the oldest Latvian micronations along with Esgeldia and Waldreich.

The Wadrian Empire was expelled on 3 March 2022 due to having pro-Putin views.

After the successful deescalation of the Riga Crisis, both the Republic of Riga and the Wadrian Empire were both admitted to the BU. Also both the Republic of Ambestan and the Republic of Dutloria were expelled due to their inactivity and in the case of Ambestan their pro-Russian views.

Outlook

In its current form, the Baltic Union is an extremely culturally, religiously and politically diverse organization. The cultural achievements of the latgalian, latvian and estonian peoples (especially widespread in Western Latgale, Revalia and Slitronia, respectively), as well as independent cultures (Waldreich and Esgeldia), which are actual isolation cultures and developing with much less Baltic or Slavic influence, are recognized as fundamental.

Religious diversity includes catholic Western Latgale and Waldreich, lutheran Slitronia and Revalia, and old believer Esgeldia.

Despite occasional disagreements, the Baltic Union firmly stands on the position of strengthening cultural, economic and political ties between the peoples of the participating countries. The former conflicts should become a thing of the past, because only through the joint efforts of the Slavic and Baltic peoples will it be possible to build friendly and fair relations between them, perhaps for the first time since the 13th century.

As of February 2022, the Baltic Union is the only micronational organization that includes most of the active micronations of the Baltic States.

Former members

For various reasons, three states left the Baltic Union. In the case of Western Latgale, this was due to the collapse and disintegration of the state, and in fact the Holy Order took its place in the Baltic Assembly and the Rata as the successor, while Korginia/Bearlandia was excluded for the instability of the political regime in their country. Waldrian Empire was excluded for its pro-Russian position on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, but was re-admitted to the organization after the change of leadership in the country. The Dutlorian Republic and the Republic of Ambestan were both expelled due to their inactivity and in the case of the former additionally due to their pro-Russian views.

Organizational structure

The Baltic Assembly is the governing collective body of the Baltic Union and the normative legal acts adopted by it are binding on the territory of all participating countries.

To address cultural and other issues within the framework of the Baltic Union, the Baltic Rat exists as the second most important governing body. Normative legal acts adopted by the Baltic Rat are advisory in nature and are adopted by the member States of the Baltic Council at their discretion. Within the framework of the Baltic Union, countries from other communities of the micronational world are accepted, these countries can receive the status of observer states and have the right to participate in the meeting of the Baltic Rat.

In order to better manage the Baltic Union, the post of President of the Baltic Union has been established, whose functions include coordinating the work of the BU. The President of the Baltic Union is elected by a closed vote in the Baltic Assembly for a period of 6 months.

Esgeldian, Latvian, Latgalian, Valdrian, Estonian and Russian are recognized as the official languages of the Baltic Union. However, to overcome the language barrier, English is used as the lingua franca language.

Official symbols

The official symbols of the Baltic Union are the flag and emblem made by the Esgeldian Heraldia at the end of December 2021.
