For army ranks, some ranks differ depending on the traditions of the unit, borrowed from the British Army. Infantry staff sergeants are known as Colour sergeants (CSgt), cavalry sergeants are known as Corporals of Horse (CoH), rifles sergeants are known as Serjeants (Sjt), corporals acting as sergeants are known as Lance sergeants (LSgt) or Lance corporals of horse (LCoH) in cavalry regiments.

Former ranks
Before the reform of the Baustralian Armed Forces, the current ranks of staff sergeant and warrant officer were three separate classes of warrant officers. Following the Canadian structure, the ranks after sergeant were Warrant officer, Master warrant officer, and Chief warrant officer. In between the ranks of corporal and sergeant was an appointment given its own paygrade, Master corporal.
