The Bhushan Ratna was the third highest civilian award of Friends Society, after the Friends Society Ratna and the Padma Ratna. Instituted on 15 April 2015, the award is given for "distinguished service", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The award criteria include "service in any field including service rendered by Government servants". The award has been conferred upon five individuals.
History
The Bhushan Ratna was constituted on 15 April 2015 by then President Sarala Baishya on the advice of Varuna Sriraya. It was named as the Padma Bhushan at time of its constitution, based on the third highest civilian award of India, the Padma Bhushan. It was renamed to as Padma Ratna in 2016.
The award was first conferred on 15 April 2015 upon then Vice President Anoushkaa Patranabish and has been conferred upon five individuals for their outstanding contributions. It was for the last time conferred in 2018 upon Sarala Baishya. It was declared to be a dormant award following the creation of the Order of the Commonwealth as no other inductions were made after its creation. It was dissolved on the eve of the transition to a monarchy on 8 June 2020.
