The Central Antarctic Republic, officially the Confederation of the Central Antarctic Republic (also known as Central Antarctica), was an ambitious Antarctic micronation project and community, formed by the union of 3 micronations. It consisted of Adelaide, New South Greenland and Bunger.

History

The Central Antarctic Republic was founded on January 1, 2015 by 3 micronations united by their passion for Antarctica. They were:

  • Adelaide Republic (founded in 2013)
  • New South Greenland (founded in 2014)
  • Bunger (founded in 2014)

They met online and decided to unite into a single entity, with the intent to build a community based on freedom, justice and equality.

Adelaide

Adelaide is the only constituent micronation which had not maintained its original territory. Adelaide now includes part of the Antarctic Peninsula and Graham Land till the South Pole.

New South Greenland

New South Greenland maintained its original territory: from the south pole to Victoria Land, including the Trans-Antarctic Mountains and part of the Ross Ice Shelf.

Bunger

Bunger maintained its original territory: the coast near the Shackleton Ice Shelf, including Bunger Hills.

Politics and Government

The Central Antarctic Republic is officially a Directorial republic founded as confederation of 3 states.

Head of State

The Head of State is the President of the Confederation nominated every year by the College of the Chancellors. He must be one of the 3 Chancellors of the confederated states of the Central Antarctic Republic.

Executive

The Confederal Council is the five-member executive council which constitutes the federal government of the Republic and serves as the Antarctic collective head of government. Each year, one of the five Councillors is elected by the Confederation Assembly as President of the Confederal Council. The Confederation Assembly also elects a Vice President. By convention, the positions of President and Vice President rotate annually, each Councillor thus becoming Vice President and then President every five years while in office.
While the entire council is responsible for leading the federal administration of CAR, each Councillor heads one of the seven federal executive departments.
The Councillors are directly elected by the citizens. In the constitution there are no parties, but nothing prevents their formation.

Confederation Assembly

The Confederation Assembly is the Central Antarctic's confederal legislature. The Confederation Assembly is bicameral, being composed of the 20-seat National Council and the 30-seat Chamber of States. The members of the National Council are directly elected by the citizens. The members of the Chamber of States are elected by the citizens of each confederated states, 10 for every member.
The Confederation Assembly possesses the federal government's legislative power, along with the separate constitutional right of citizen's initiative. For a law to pass, it must be passed by both houses.
