The Chief Justice of Algard is the chief judge in the Supreme Court of Algard and is the highest ranking office in the Algardian Judiciary.
History
The role of chief justice is the oldest in the judiciary in Algard. It was established by Kyle of Algard on 7 July 2022.
Powers and Duties
Along with their general responsibilities as a member of the Supreme Court, the chief justice has several unique duties to fulfill.
Impeachment Trials
The chief justice is legislated to chair the senate throughout the impeachment of presidents. However the president is immune from term limits, term length and impeachments while the nation is under a provisional government, dictatorship or while the parliament is suspended.
Seniority
Many of the court's procedures and inner workings are governed by the rules of protocol based on the seniority of the justices. The chief justice always ranks first in the order of precedence—regardless of the length of the officeholder's service (even if shorter than that of one or more associate justices). This elevated status has enabled successive chief justices to define and refine both the court's culture and its judicial priorities.
The chief justice sets the agenda for the weekly meetings as well as deciding whether to hear or deny each case.
Presidential Oath
The chief justice traditionally administers the presidential oath of office to a newly elected, incoming President. If the chief justice is ill or incapacitated, the oath is usually administered by the senior-most member of the Supreme Court.
