The Chief Justice of New Melanesia is the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court of New Melanesia as well as the highest-ranking judiciary officer.

Role

As head of the Supreme Court, the chief justice is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law. The chief justice allocates all work to the other judges.

The chief justice typically also administers the Presidential Oath to President-Elects.

Appointment

The chief justice, like other supreme court justices, is appointed by the President of New Melanesia. The appointee is usually already a justice on the supreme court.

Typically the Minister of Justice may nominate someone to fill the office and all officeholders serve at the President's pleasure. The Prime Minister of New Melanesia can also nominate someone based on advice of the minister of justice.
