The Chief of the Defence Staff is the most senior military officer of the National Armed Forces of Roscamistan behind the Commander in Chief, who is the President of Roscamistan.

The Chief of the Defence Staff is the chairman of the Defence Staff (formerly the Central Defence Committee) in peacetime. The Commander-in-Chief assumes the role of chairman of the Defence Staff in wartime. The Chief is also the highest military officer in the Ministry of Defence, being nominated by the Defence Secretary before being confirmed by the President of Roscamistan.

The current Chief of the Defence staff is Jan Kotoński.

Powers and responsibilities

The Chief has powers over the Defence Staff in his capacity as its Chairman. He is the highest commanding officer behind the President. The Chief also has power to dismiss any court-martial case in the Armed Forces. The Chief must at least be a commissioned officer in the National Armed Forces (paramilitary groups do not count, as of November 2022). A Chief can be from either of the five main service branches. So an admiral can be a Chief, and so can an Air Marshal.

The Chief is also responsible to the Ministry of Defence and serves also as the advisor to the Secretary of State for Defence, though when Doros Patusky, the 4th Defence Secretary became Chief of the Defence Staff on 31 December 2021 after the sacking of Ludwig Collins, the Vice-Chief became his advisor. On 17 March 2022, Doros Patusky was sacked from the Chief of the Defence Staff and replaced by Ludwig Collins, bringing the way things should have been when it came to advice.

Styles and rules of succession

The Chief is referred to as The Honourable in documents and formal occasions, though not used in other circumstances.

If the incumbent Chief is elected President, the office will immediately vacate upon being sworn-in as President, as the Commander-in-Chief cannot be the Chief at the same time, and vice versa. The Vice-Chief will become acting Chief until a successor is found.
