Etymology

The name Nekut comes from the Powhatan word nekut meaning one.[1] The original name, "Netuk", was a misspelling of the word came from a mistake by Nicholas Kaos who decided Netuk sounded better. The choice for using the word nekut came from Kaos' distant descendancy from the Powhatan people on his mother's side.

The Cherokee word saquu (also meaning one[2]) was also considered as a name for the city, as Kaos' paternal grandfather was Cherokee, however, nekut was chosen by consensus of the residents.
