The Deputy Prime Minister of Austenasia is the deputy to the Prime Minister (PM), head of government of the Empire of Austenasia. After each general election, the newly-elected Prime Minister chooses a Representative to serve as their deputy with the approval of the Monarch. The Deputy Prime Minister servers as Acting Prime Minister should the PM resign, die, or otherwise be incapacitated before the next election.
Prior to January 2018, the position of Deputy Prime Minister was held by the Representative to gain the second-highest number of votes in a general election, and as such served almost as an informal "Leader of the Opposition" in some respects, albeit with the intention for the two most popular candidates to work together post-election.
List of Deputy Prime Ministers
Number | Picture | Name | Town | Deputy to | Took office | Left office | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Lord General William K., 2nd Duke of Royton, KOR, KCA, DSC | South Kilttown | HIH Crown Prince Jonathan | 25 Apr 2009 | 7 Mar 2010 | Assumed office upon becoming Representative of South Kilttown; despite not having contested a General Election, the office of Deputy Prime Minister became generally regarded as naturally held by the only Representative other than that of Wrythe (Wrythe and South Kilttown being the only two inhabited Towns in the Empire at the time). Was considered removed from office upon losing the office of Representative of South Kilttown with the outbreak of the Austenasian Civil War. | |
2 | John K., OAO | South Kilttown | HIH Crown Prince Jonathan | 7 Mar 2010 | 10 Sep 2010 | Became Acting Representative of South Kilttown upon the outbreak of the Austenasian Civil War, a de facto titular status due to residing in rebel-held territory. This meant he was considered de jure Deputy Prime Minister by many and was referred to as such numerous times by several government figures, despite playing no part in government and having not been elected. | |
3 | Lord Marshal William K., Baron of Zephyria | Zephyria | HIH Crown Prince Jonathan | 10 Sep 2010 | 20 Jan 2013 | Act 125 (Reform of South Kilttown) reappointed William as Representative of South Kilttown, which was renamed Zephyria (alt. "Zephirya"). He reassumed the office of Deputy Prime Minister until he became Acting Prime Minister upon the ascension to the Throne of Jonathan I. He came second in the December 2011 General Election, fulfilling the official requirements to hold the office for the first time. | |
- | Vacant | 20 Jan 2013 | 19 Nov 2013 | The position became vacant when Lord Marshal William became Acting Prime Minister upon the ascension of Jonathan I to the Throne. The Constitution stated that "the Monarch shall appoint an Acting Deputy Prime Minister from the Representatives" should this happen, but provides no time limit by which this must be done. The position remained vacant until the November 2013 General Election. | |||

Unlike the previous vacancy, when the Prime Minister had no deputy for ten months, the Monarch appointed an Acting Deputy a mere three weeks after the resignation of the Countess. On 20 January 2018, the Second Amendment to the Constitution came into force, establishing that from henceforth the Deputy Prime Minister would be appointed by a newly-elected Prime Minister rather than being the runner-up in the election. Was appointed to the position proper on 2 March 2019 after the re-election of Brooklyn Hewitt. Retained position for two days after the secession of Terentia; the first time the office had been held by a non-Representative. |
