Elections in the Grand Unified Micronational

In the Grand Unified Micronational, elections take place every six months to elect the Chair of the organisation.

Procedure

Sections F-L of Article III, Chapter IV of the Charter of the Grand Unified Micronational define the election procedure. All full member states are entitled to cast one vote each. Elections utilise first-past-the-post. Elections typically take place in June and December. There is a one week nominating period, followed by a week of campaigning and a week of voting before the results are announced. Delegations may vote for any candidate, or for a "none of the above" option, which re-opens nominations if it receives the most votes.

Since the April 2009 election, all election voting has taken place on the GUM's MicroWiki talk page. The format of the ballots on the talk page has remained largely unchanged over the past ten years and circa thirty administrations.

Historic procedure

Under the 2016 Charter, only the Chair is elected by a full election of national delegations. Other officers, such as the Vice-Chair and the Supreme Judge, are nominated by the Chair and confirmed by votes of the Quorum of Delegates. However, under the 2014 Charter, the Supreme Judge and the officers of the Secretariat were all directly elected. Prior to 2014, members of the Advancement Council and the Security Council were directly elected. Prior to 2016, Chairs were elected every three months, rather than every six months.
