The Erusian Democratic Alliance for the Representation of Workers' Interests or EDARWI, more commonly known as the Erusian Democratic Workers' Alliance or simply as the EDWA, was one of only two legal political parties in the Democratic People's Republic of Erusia, the other being the ruling Erusian National Communist Party. Established as the result of a forced union between the then-suspended People's National Front for Democracy and Reform and Social Liberty Party following the passing of the Erusian Proleterian Protection Act, the Democratic Workers' Alliance was the fixed minority party under Erusia's old constitution, never permitted to hold as many or more seats than the Communist Party in the National People's Assembly. Officially the Alliance adhered to the somewhat non-specific ideology of Democratic Socialism - in reality, anyone who disapproves of the ruling ENCP may join the EDWA. In addition to being limited in terms of Assembly seats EDWA members were forbidden from holding any public office apart from elected officials (including the Premier of the National People's Assembly). The Alliance was also notable for being the first Socialist organisation within a Rennie-Gaffneyisy state to use the style Workers, with most such institutions preferring the style People's.

When the new Erusian constitution was implemented on 28 May 2009 and restored limited multi-party democracy, it became immediately clear that acting EDWA leader Itakur Kiwal would dissolve the Alliance. A day later, Kiwal formally announced the Alliance would be dissolved and be replaced by the Erusian Democratic Alliance.

History

The Democratic Workers' Alliance was established in the Constitution of Erusia following massive constitutional reform in January 2009 that saw the Erusian National Communist Party expel all opposition from the National People's Assembly and seize control of all executive power. In keeping with Progressive Revolution Theory - a key tenant of Rennie-Gaffneyism - the Communist Party ordered that the People's National Front for Democracy and Reform and Social Liberty Party merge to form the core membership of the Alliance. The Communist Party established the National Charter of the Erusian Democratic Workers' Alliance to dictate the ideology and function of the Alliance in its initial state. Maria Carlisle, former leader of the People's Democratic Front, was made the official leader of the Alliance following the union of both opposiiton parties. Although the Erusian State continued to insist that Carlisle is the leader of the Alliance she had no involvement in it and is instead seeking to externally contest the legitimacy of the Erusian government.

Ideology

The National Charter of the Alliance established the official ideology of the EDWA as Democratic Socialism, an umbrella term used to refer to any and all ideologies within the Alliance. In practice the Alliance can be seen as a popular front of differing political groups, unified under constitutional law but effectively operating independent of one another.

Official Ideology

The official ideology of the Alliance was guided by the Five Red Stars of Democratic Socialism, represented on the flag of the Alliance, which supposedly represent the core tenets of the Alliance.

  • Democracy - the Alliance asserted itself as being committed to the promotion of Communist Democracy by working with the Erusian National Communist Party to represent the interests of the People (referred to as Workers in the Alliance in a more traditional Socialist style) in the "revolutionary proletarian struggle".
  • Proletarian Socialism - the Alliance stood for the representation of more classical Socialism that emphasises the proletarian revolution before the People's Revolution.
  • Unity - the Alliance stood for the preservation of Socialist unity both micronationally and intermicronationally.
  • Equality - the Alliance stood for the equal representation of all minorities in society.
  • Humanity - the Alliance stood for the respect of basic Human rights and dignities.
