The February 2021 Riveri National Assembly election took place on 20 February 2021, to elect members of the Riveri National Assembly. The West River Greens retained their majority in the Assembly.

Background

In the 2020 election, the West River Greens won a five-seat majority in the Assembly. Immediately after the election, Green Assemblyman Sean Dunkerque resigned to accept an appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In November 2020, the Assembly passed bills creating two new seats in the Assembly, through the establishment of the republic of Ceeba, and the seperation of Thomasville from Picklesine. The seperation of Thomasville did not establish a new seat, it reduced the number of seats in Picklesine. Collectively, these bills expanded the number of seats in the National Assembly from 7 to 8.

The Centre Democrats, led by Renzo Wessels, dissolved in early December 2020, with Wessels joining the Greens. On 13 January 2021, activist Ariel Lederman founded the Liberal Alliance, a right libertarian party. Riveri Ambassador to Bryantia Guy Watts left the Greens the same day, and formed the centrist Riveri Democratic Party. President Benjamin Pickles dissolved the National Assembly, calling the election, on 11 February 2021.

Election system

Section III of article I of the Constitution of West River outlines the system used for National Assembly elections.

Section III: Elections for the Assembly can be called by the President of the Confederation (see Article II) at any time, but can be held no later than the third Saturday of the fourth month since the previous election. These elections will be held separately in each region, using the election system commonly known as Single Transferable Vote.

Picklesine will have 3 seats, Logastan will have 2 seats, and Ellisine; Ceeba; and the City of Thomasville will each have 1 seat.

Notes

  1. No individuals filed to run in Ceeba. Due to this, incumbent member Arden Zwählen will keep his seat until a by-election is held on an unspecified date.
  2. The West River Greens designated Logan Jack as its candidate for first minister. The party's leadership is held collectively by the members in general meetings.
  3. 3.0 3.1 Candidates for the Kiwian Party refuse to take their seats if they win, in protest of the fact that West River claims sovereignty over Kiwian claimed territory.
