The flag of Alsann is a national civil ensign used by the Alsann Republic since 23 September 2022, and in the current design since 23 December 2022. It is a diagonal-striped design with charged canton, with bands of red, blue and white giving way to a red field featuring the Alsane flower sigil in the canton. The Alsann Proclamation described the ensign as the 'flag of Alsann'[1], and as such it is used as the Alsann Republic's national flag and as the de facto flag of unincorporated territories.

History and origins

The flag of Alsann was adopted following a national plebiscite on 17 December 2022. It was designed by Kalan Cameron del Kersika the month prior as a concept for a replacement for the flag. It was chosen over 4 other designs, including the prior eagle flag, with 42.9% support. The flag was designed using Figma when the Officer-General was 'messing around' with flag designs. It has been used in official capacities since the federal election and accompanying plebiscite concluded on 23 December 2022, and was certified by the Officer-General on 2 May 2023. It also inspired the creation of new flags for Kersika, Flinders, Aeonia and Goolamrup in February 2023.

Eagle flag

The first flag of the Alsann Republic

The first flag of Alsann, colloquially known as the eagle flag, was a flag used in the Alsann Republic from 23 September 2022 to 23 January 2022. The flag featured the former Crest of the Eagle laid over a red-and-white bicolour field. It was detailed in the Alsann Proclamation[1] and its replacement 85 days later was only the second time an element of the Proclamation had been replaced (preceded only by the Federal Council replacing the Council of Representatives). It continued to be used on government communication channels until 23 January 2023, when it was entirely retired 127 days after becoming Alsann's first flag.

It was technically a charged bicolour flag, with dimensions of 923:571 or 1.6164[2] The flag's colours were not explicitly defined by the Alsann Proclamation, though the document does describe the use of the former Alsane coat of arms. The following is a table of its main colours.

Scheme Red White Medium blue Brown Dark yellow
Hex triplet #B31E1E #FFFFFF #2F9FB8 #403121 #C1975C
RGB 179, 30, 30 255, 255, 255 49, 159, 184 64, 49, 33 193, 151, 92

The first flag of Alsann was sketched by the Officer-General in a notebook between 10 and 15 September 2022. The next day, he utilised the already-designed coat of arms and graphic design program Figma to create the final version of the flag. Its first known appearance online is on the Alsane News Service website, which was quickly followed by the MicroWiki article and the government website. It was then used as design inspiration for most other Alsane flags, especially military ensigns [3]. This trend was only reversed in February 2023, when many legacy flags were updated to a new design language.

Colours and composition

The Alsane coat of arms, as on the flag

The Alsane flag has dimensions of 20:13 (1.5385) and uses 6 main colours, three dominant and three recessive. Whilst its colours were not defined in words, the selected flag does have certain colour properties.

Scheme Red White Blue Light blue Black Yellow
Hex triplet #BD4038 #FFFFFF #1F6D99 #2AB1CE #000000 #EAC84F
RGB 189, 64, 56 255, 255, 255 49, 159, 184 64, 49, 33 193, 151, 92

Rules and use

The Alsann Republic has no explicit policies on the use of their flag. Multiple de facto policies exist, however. One is that flags may only be flown at half-mast for a week on the Officer-General's orders. Another expresses that the only way in which an Alsane flag may be destroyed is through cutting or slicing in a private environment, then appropriately disposing of it. Any government building, whether state or federal, should fly the flag. Civilians should only fly the flag in the correct orientation, and no modifications should be made to it.
