The flag of the Second Commonwealth of Australis is the current civil and state flag of Australis. The flag was designed and subsequently approved by Daniel Hamilton, the President of Australis, on 16 October 2023. The current flag was adopted to replace the flag used between 2020 and 2023, as part of efforts to establish a new national identity with the establishment of the Second Commonwealth and abolition of the Grand Duchy.

Design

The flag of Australis is a horizontal flag composed of four colours in a symmetrical design and features five stars arranged in a horizontal line in the centre of the flag. The central star is larger than the surrounding 4, and serves as a continuing symbol of the original five states that formed Australis during the First Commonwealth in 2020. The remaining four stars, in combination with the central star, symbolise the five original founders of Australis.

Two of the colours featured on the flag, green and gold, are the national colours of Australis, in addition to its macronation, Australia.[1] The colours represent the native Australian Golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha). The blue on the flag represents the wisdom and happiness of the Australisian people, and the white represents the peace and purity of Australis.

Display

Currently, two professional-quality Australisian flags have been created, belonging to Daniel Hamilton and Abrams Wiucki-Dunswed, the current President of Australis and former Prime Minister of Australis, respectively. Currently, the flags are on permanent display at the President's Residence of Australis located in New Yera, Amicitia, and in the residence of Wiucki-Dunswed. These flags represent the second flag, retired in 2023.

Flying standards

The Flag Code of Australis dictates that the flag must be hoisted at a 90-degree angle perpendicular to the ground, or any angle above 45 degrees perpendicular to the ground. On days of remembrance or mourning, the flag is permitted to be flown at half-mast, or horizontal, with the hoist parallel to the ground. It is considered illegal to damage or destroy a flag of Australis, or to fly the flag upside-down.[2]

The flag was flown at on a horizontal mast for two weeks in the residence of the Grand Duke in accordance with mourning procedures, following the death of Blake, one of the two national hounds of Australis owned by the House of Roscoe.

Flag Challenge

Throughout August 2020, the Australisian Government held a public event to fly the Australisian flag in as many locations as possible. The idea was inspired by Operation Wegstany, a similar event held in the US-based micronation of Wegmat. Eight people participated in the challenge across four countries, each from another continent - France, US, Australia and India, in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia respectively.[3]

As the challenge was widely viewed as a success, the challenge formed an integral part of Australisian cultural development.

Flag Day

Flag Day is a national holiday in Australis, as specified by the Australissian Codex of National Holidays.[4] It is held annually on 7 July, to celebrate the patriotism inspired by the Australisian flag. The first Flag Day occurred on Wednesday 7 July 2021. The Codex further describes the national day:

Flag Day, held on July 7, is a proud day for citizens of Australis, where we come together and fly our national flag proudly, and celebrate what it means to be an Australisian. - Australissian Codex of National Holidays

Other notable flags

In addition to the national flag of Australis, several other flags have been implemented for subdivisions of Australis, such as states and cities. All of these flags were personally designed by the Grand Duke, and attempt to incorporate the national colours of Australis - green and gold.

Other retired flags

Each state of Australis during the Grand Duchal era had a flag used for individual representation. The following flags were used at some point for territories in Australis.

Flag Name Adopted Description
Flag of Amicitia 30 November 2020 The former flag of Amicitia. This flag was originally designed as a proposed new flag for Australis, alongside the current flag, however, it was rejected. A modified version of this flag later became the currently used flag.
Flag of New Eiffel 12 February 2021 Although this flag has been used for the erstwhile Principality of New Eiffel, it carried over as the official flag of the Australisian state of New Eiffel.
Flag of Integritas 14 February 2021 The former flag of Integritas. Implemented in February 2021 after criticism of the previous flag design.

Territorial flags

Every territory claimed by Australis has an official flag, used in the territory alongside the national flag.

Flag Name Date adopted Description
Flag of New Yera 29 January 2021 A vertical tricolour of blue, white and green, with the shield of Australis and Grand Duchal crown atop a torse, surrounded by two Kangaroo Paw, commonly occuring natural flora in Australis.

In its history, Australis has adopted three flags. The first flag, designed by Daniel Hamilton in April 2020, was hastily made with the Microsoft Windows 10 application, Paint 3D. As a result of the rushed nature of the design and the limitations of the software used to create the flag, several issues arose once the flag had been implemented. Although the flag was designed with a ratio of 1:2, it was revealed that one side was slightly longer than the other, bringing concerns about the flag's suitability for further use. In addition, it was also found that the five-pointed star situated on the left side of the flag was not correctly centred relative to the yellow half of the flag. In addition, several micronationalists pointed out that the left half of the flag constituted a violation of the rule of tincture, stating that metal should not be put on metal, with the heraldic colours or and argent, known as yellow and white respectively, being considered metal. The specific violation discovered on the flag's design was the instance of the argent (white) five-pointed star charged on the or (yellow) field.[5] As a result of this, the Grand Duke of Australis designed another flag, in line with the rule of tincture, which was subsequently adopted as the flag of Australis until October 2023.

The second flag of Australis, also known as the 'Hexi-Star', was a vertical flag composed of four colours in a symmetrical design and featured six stars. Five outer five-pointed stars surrounded a large inner five-pointed star, representing the original five founders of Australis, and also the five original states of Australis - Amicitia, Integritas, Beatitudinem, Felicitatem and Aequalitatem. The inner five-pointed star represented the five states unified into one nation.

The flag was blazoned as follows:[2]

Azure between a mullet of five points, five more mullets of five points in annulo all Argent, two tierces, the dexter tierced per pale Or Vert Argent the sinister tierced per pale Argent Vert Or.
