Flinders, occasionally the State of Flinders, is a federal state of the Alsann Republic. It was established on 8 September 2022, when it declared independence from the Commonwealth of Australia alongside Aeonia and Kersika. It is located west of the Darling Range in Perth, and has a large amount of land near Augusta. It was governed over de facto by Member for Flinders and former Premier in the Federal Council, Ozren C, from 8 September 2022 to 3 June 2023.

Etymology

Flinders takes its name from 18th and 19th century explorer, Matthew Flinders. The English navigator sailed along the southern Australian coast, where much of Flinders' territory is, in 1801, and later circumnavigated the Australian continent the next year. Flinders' capital city, Austeria, takes its name directly from the Latin for 'north'. Austeria was previously the northernmost state in the early Concordian Republic, however was later reduced to a city where former Premier Ozren C resides.

History

Flinders' only city, Austeria, was the first of its territories to be incorporated into a nation. It was brought in as an unnamed town when Ozren C joined the Concordian Republic in late 2021. Eventually, when the Concordian Republic's second republic reforms occurred in mid-2022, the name was brought to the city. It was also those reforms that brought much of the southern territories of Flinders to the new state of Ithyca.

Flinders was brought into Alsann when it was founded on 8 September 2022, though originally under its previous name of Ithyca. It was changed sometime in mid-September, at the same time as its southern portion became contiguous and expanded. Ozren C was quickly appointed Member for Flinders in the Alsane Federal Council, and he was later granted the leading role of Premier.

Constitutional crisis

Following Alsann's 2022 federal election, the nation witnessed multiple months of inactivity. Following this, a new election was declared, intended to be the 2023 regional elections. In this time, Kersika and Aeonia were both only contested by their incumbents while Flinders was completely uncontested.

After the election had been called off, Ozren C resigned on 3 June 2023, resulting in a constitutional crisis in broader Alsann. It also affected Flinders deeply, as they had no candidates to lead, as the former Premier stated a desire to retire entirely from governing, and no word on whether Flinders' other residents would be willing. The current solution proposed by the Officer-General is to temporarily leave Flinders empty before allowing it to be contested in the 2023 Alsane federal election.
