The Foundation Era was a period in the history of the Confederation of Awesome that spanned its independence to the establishment of an effective government to rule it. This period is largely considered to span the nation’s first eleven months of existence, from the signing of the Declaration of Confederation to the election of the nation’s first Cabinet. This era saw the adoption of the Constitution of the Confederation of Awesome, foreign entanglements such as the Southern-Awesomite War, and territorial expansion.

Independence

The Confederation of Awesome became a nation with the signing of the Declaration of Confederation. This resulted in the adoption of a provisional government that put all executive, legislative, and judicial power in the hands of the Confederation Congress. The public was largely supportive of this government, and during the time it was often referred to by citizens as the “Triumvirate,” compared to the powerful government of three in ancient Rome. During the very early years of the Confederation, the nation was strictly neutral in the foreign affairs of other countries.

Samian Annexation

One of the key foreign policy advances during the early period of the Confederation was the signing of a treaty of alliance with the Union of Samian City States. This alliance was not one of military co-operation, but the two nations formed a close relationship. When Samia began going into a period of inactivity, an obvious solution was to join the Confederation. This was agreed upon by both sides, and after negotiations, the USCS was annexed by the Confederation at 12:01 am on September 5, 2010. Currently, the territory brought in by the Samian Annexation compromises 50% of total Confederation territory, and just under half it’s population. The annexation was looked upon in favor publicly in the Confederation, and it rallied a large amount of national pride. The Samian Prime Minister, Brendon Weston immediately took his seat in Confederation Congress.

The Southern-Awesomite War

Citizens of the Confederation were harassed by citizens of the Southern Union as far back as the Union’s foundation. This may or may not have been related to the signing of a bill prompting the creation of the Confederation’s Military on 1 August 2010. Nonetheless, as diplomatic talks broke down between the two countries, a declaration of war by the Confederation failed to pass Congress until the Union declared war first on October 7, 2010. The Confederation Military won three battles against the Southern Union and Sophopolis, and signed the Treaty of Weston 2010. Although the Confederation gained no territory from the Treaty, several ex-Sophopolian citizens joined the Confederation after the war.

Economic Issues

Confederation Congress authorized the creation of the Confederation dollar on November 20, 2010. The Confederation’s weak economy was boosted by provincial efforts to create jobs and distribute the Confederation dollar in Davetopia. Seeing that the nation’s currency was considered illegitimate, HRM Dave I spearheaded the creation of a treasury that would begin the collection of US dollars to back the Confederation’s currency.

Signing of the Constitution

While the provisional government could effectively run the country when there were only three members of Congress, the addition of a fourth province and a large expansion of citizens prompted the need for more effective government. A Constitution was drafted by Samian Prime Minister West, and it was brought to the table at a meeting with HRM Dave I, where he gave his support to the new Constitution after revising it slightly. When the Constitution was officially brought to the table at Confederation Congress, it was unanimously accepted by all of the representatives. In accordance with this new Constitution, a Cabinet of important provincial politicians and exports was appointed by Congress on February 1, 2011. With the signing of the First Cabinet Act, the nation had a fully functioning government, and as such that signing is largely considered the end of the Foundation Era.
