Sir Geoffrey Phillip Marsden PC ONU (born 6 May 1977) is a Canadian micronationalist who currently serves as the Governor of New Ulster. Marsden, a retired sergeant in the Canadian Army, was nominated Governor on 2 August 2021 by Premier Ethan McAllister and, under the "no contest" clause of the Constitution Act, formally assumed the powers of the office on 16 August 2021. During the interim he was constitutionally defined as Administrator of the Government.

Early life

Marsden was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 6 May 1977, and was the second son born to Sgt. (Ret.) Geoffrey Marsden (born 1951) and Esther Phillis Marsden (née Cullen; 1952–2011). His middle name was given in memory of his parents' first son, Phillip, who died aged 2 in 1975 and because of its similarity to his mother's middle name.

Born into a military family, Marsden's father and grandfather had served in the Canadian Army. His father's service often required the family to move during Marsden's youth and at varying points, the family lived in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. His father was posted to CFB Gagetown from 1988, leading the family to settle there.

Career

Initially intending to become a lawyer, Marsden applied to study law at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Law but was turned down. It was then he began focusing on a military career and was recruited as a private in the Royal Canadian Dragoons in 1995; the same year his father retired after 25 years' service.

While serving with the Canadian Army, Marsden was deployed in the former Yugoslavia with the UN and NATO. He was promoted to Corporal in 1998 and Master Corporal in 2000. In 2002, he qualified DP3A and was recommended for promotion to sergeant which duly took place in September of that year. Having his own childhood disrupted by his father's time in the military, Marsden chose to retire in 2004 when starting a family.
