Traverria, officially known as the Imperial Republic of Traverria, and abbreviated as the I.R.T., is a micronation located in the southeast part of the city of Portland, Oregon. It is bordered by Rakozia to the south. Traverria spans an area of 1.10770809 square miles (2.86895077 square kilometres), with its protected cultural land totaling to just over 3 square miles (7.769964 square kilometers). The nation consists of three provinces and four special administrative divisions. The nation uses a semi-meritocratic quasi-democratic constitutional monarchy as it's governmental system. The official languages of Traverria are Traverrian and English.

Five amendments have been passed since ratification. Traverria rapidly grew in size during the later part of 2020, reaching twenty-five citizens as of 31 August 2022, which also marked Traverria's first citizen out of the immediate vicinity. Traverria aspires to join alliances such as the Cupertino Alliance and Grand Unified Micronational.

Etymology and Vexilology

The name Traverria comes from the Traverrian word Trazhelrila, which roughly translates to "my homeland." In English, Traverria was derived from the word "traverse," as the Emperor knew the nation had come a long way, and traveled through time and physical distance, as well as change, to get where it was presently. The term "imperial republic" was derived from the nation having the ideals of a democratic republic, whilst having the Emperor and Empress as head of state.

The flag of Traverria has three horizontal stripes (dark blue, yellow, and green from top to bottom), a large black diamond (rhombus) shape, and a light blue star in the center. The dark blue represents the sky, peace, wisdom and intelligence of the nation. The yellow represents the sunrise on the horizon and the benevolence and wealth of the country. The green represents the fertile fields and forests, while also representing nature and harmony. The black represents the power and strength of the nation, the rhombus signifying the connection between heaven and earth. The light blue star represents peace and progression.

History

Pre-unification Era

Traverria was born as the State of Hadea, in an area of many other small warring states. The nations were mainly focused on acquisition of land, and skirmishes were commonplace, leading up to four wars that nearly shattered the community. After the fourth war, the nations of Hadea and Thornadia (the latter of which was run by the now Chief of Armed Forces of Traverria) agreed to merge and create Thornadea, which quickly dissolved into Thornadia and Falcadea. The capital of Falcadea moved locations due to the change in the location of the Presidential House, and by the time 2020 had just made its calendar appearance, Falcadea had changed, yet again, to the nation of Hanjiang (now today's Pa'anjya'ang/Hanjiang Province). As the nation slowly stabilized, it strived towards a united nation of prosperity, and after doing research on micronationalism, decided to create a new unified nation.

Unification and Independence

In May 2020, the now Emperor Andrew I proposed to the leader of Thornadia a plan of unification. Immediately agreeing, Elliott of Thornadia became the Chief of Armed Forces of Traverria, and would become one of the most prominent figures in the development of Traverrian culture and government. After compiling a speech to give on the day that Traverria would become an independent nation, they ventured to the province of Thornadia and gave the Declaration of Independence in the now Sokan Special Administrative Region. More nation leaders were presented the unification plan, and after several weeks, nearly the entire sector was unified under an alliance, or had decided to merge with Traverria.

First Cultural Golden Age

In the summer and fall of 2020, Traverria underwent a massive cultural boom, with the development of a flag, coat of arms, national symbols, and a language, The culture and language of Traverria was initially based off of Tibetan culture, and was dramatically influenced by the cultural backgrounds of each citizen, with the adding of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese customs. Cuisines were explored in the local produce grown in Traverria, and many sports were designed for entertainment. Traverria signed their first treaty of mutual recognition with the Grand Republic of Cycoldia, though relations have become static since the signing of the treaty.

The Great Immigration and the 2021 Recession

Traverria experienced a massive growth in population in Spring 2021. Emperor Kalreta attempted to make the nation more widely known, with mixed success. Multiple people in the vicinity of Traverria became citizens, though the presence of the nation was still relatively unknown. After this great immigration, though, Traverria underwent a massive recession, a period of inactivity that went on for months, finally ending in the fall of 2021. Traverria had almost completely stopped the development of culture, and the government was all but active. The only thing keeping the nation from going permanently defunct was the expanding of Traverria's cuisine, most of this being credited to Chief of Armed Forces Soto Ngone. Soto Ngone still remains a prominent developer of Traverrian culture. The nation eventually returned to life in the fall and winter of 2021 with word of micronationalism getting out, and much development in what is now regarded as the Willamette Valley Micronational Sector.

Second Cultural Golden Age and the Warring Nations Period

The Second Cultural Golden Age of Traverria can be credited to two things. Soto Ngone and his contributions in culture and military weapons development, and the creation of micronations in the Willamette Micronational Sector. With the creation of the nearby nation of Corkerierum, also known as Noralsia (which was defunct for a period of time), the nation sprung back to life, this sudden activity further heightened when Rakozia and the now-defunct nation of Bambia (formerly known as Nazione Dei Pertetti). War between the nations of Bambia, Noralsia, and the Great Canadian Empire were frequent, Traverria and Rakozia constantly mediating the young and boisterous micronational sector. The culture of all the nations around Traverria seemed to grow as well, as each nation exchanged ideas and culture. There was high tension between the nations, though, especially in early 2022, when it was revealed Bambia had created a Nazi-inspired flag and had embraced fascist ideals. This angered most micronations in the area, Rakozia notably being the most outraged. Skirmishes in areas near Bambia, which are now called the Corkerian-Bambian Skirmishes, were very common, though it remained a stalemate on either side.

Traverrian-Bambian War

Operation Zhu Zi

The war originally started in February 2022, when the Traverrian Intelligence and Military Surveillance Agency (TIMSA) and Rakozian officials created a fake micronation named Zephristan to spy on Corkerian and Bambian officials. This operation became known as Operation Zhu Zi, which translates to bamboo in Mandarin Chinese. At this point in time, Corkerierum and Bambia were allies, and Rakozia and Traverria had become allies. Shifting borders and conflicting ideologies also played a part in the tension of the region. After a few months, in May of 2022, just after Traverria's Independence Day, Traverria and Rakozia planned to invade Bambia in an attempt to show the consequence of the latter nation's former actions.

Operation Baked Beans and the Creation of Kalromchye Rlemyochye

On June 2nd, 2022, Traverrian forces deployed from Trekkhazheba city and crossed the border into Bambia via the main Traverrian road T-3, taking a portion of the southern and western capital territory of Bambia. They were met with no resistance from Bambia. General Soto Ngone decided to name the new territory Kalromchye Rlemyochye, translating to almost/near victory. Traverria used it as a warning to Bambia, that any more actions along nazism or fascism will be punished. Bambia quickly dissolved, giving land to Traverria, Zephristan, and the newly formed nation of Adrenea before merging into Corkerierum, which became known as Noralsia that same day.

Summer, Autumn, and Winter 2022

Traverria's modern history mainly consists of Traverria's desire to branch out in the community, the nation looking into many alliances to join, and expanding their economic sector with the introduction of tea farming and processing to the nation during the summer of 2022. Traverria also gained a Lunar Calendar during 2022 as well. After the dissolving of Noralsia and the abandonment of Operation Zhu Zi, Traverria and Rakozia's activity has slowed significantly, but has not ceased.

Downsizing and Branching Out

On December 15th, 2022, Traverria downsized their land considerably to only include unoccupied areas devoid of non-citizens and small parcels where citizens reside. Most of Hanjiang and Machisa Provinces were relinquished back to the United States, as well as nearly half of Thornadia Province. Then, on December 20th, Traverria was accepted as a provisional member state of the Grand Unified Micronational. Traverria is also looking into other intermicronational alliances and projects, as well as projects within the Willamette Valley Micronational Sector.

April 2023: Chaos Erupts

On 11 April 2023, Rakozia’s Prime Minister, Maya Faulhaber, declared independence and seceded from the nation of Rakozia, forming the nation of Clairciel and crowning herself as Queen. Shortly after, she illegitimately claimed the Woodstock Panhandle, an area in which a five-month dispute had just recently been resolved with Traverria’s annexation of land across the Willamette, thereby handing over the entire Panhandle to Rakozia. Maya further claimed southeast Woodstock, which is regarded as Traverrian cultural land and must be preserved to protect the nation’s culture. Tensions flared quickly, with Rakozia on the brink of civil war and Clairciel refusing to back down. Traverria had also now publicly stated their opposition to Clairciel, and Maya made it clear that she would not hesitate to declare war unless she obtained the land she desired. Many (somewhat heated) talks between the leaders commenced, with a suggestion from a revived Corkerierum which stated that Rakozia give Clairciel an enclave in the Panhandle, while Rakozia would administer the rest. Reluctantly, Clairciel agreed. A new nation, Petriwood, has also been created shortly after Clairciel, when another citizen of Rakozia decided to declare independence as well. Because his nation was an enclave in Clairciel, not much issue arose. Clairciel relinquished it’s claims of southeast Woodstock and the Panhandle, and pledged its non-aggression towards Traverria and its allies. With a new revival of Bambia and Clairciel’s formal independence on April 26th 2023, tensions, while still high, are slowly simmering down.

The Summer 2023 Standstill

During the summer of 2023, the nation’s progression and activities came to a sudden halt. This was due to most citizens’ pursuits of personal obligations aside from micronationalism. During August of 2023, Traverria slowly rumbled back to life as talks of meeting with linguistics professors from Reed College had been re-ignited. Traverses also saw record high temperatures up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit between 13 and 16 August. The Royal Family briefly met with some citizens in Tsabyo Province (which had unfortunately been neglected in the census until recently) on 21 August.

Geography and Climate

Map of Southeast Portland Micronational Sector within the Willamette Valley Micronational Sector

Traverria is located in the city of Portland Oregon, and is a nation within the Willamette Valley Micronational Sector. The geography of Traverria is characterized by low hills and the Willamette River. Traverria contains 3 provinces and 3 special administrative regions.

The nation is made up of many small parcels of land surrounded on all sides by the United States, except for the southern border of a portion of Hanjiang Province, which is bordered by Rakozia to the south. There is currently a plan to share land in the Oaks Bottom and Sellwood Park region between Rakozia and Traverria. The nation contains several parks, though most of the flora and fauna native to the region has left due to heavy urbanization prior to Traverria's creation.

Climate

The climate of Traverria is near identical to that of Portland, Oregon. It classifies as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) bordering on a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa). Temperatures usually range from 82.3 °F in summertime to 36.2 °F in winter. Rainfall is heavily concentrated between October and April, with winter days typically being gray and rainy. Snow usually falls once or twice a year, though accumulations typically don't exceed four inches annually. Droughts and wildfires are common in the summer, and recently Traverria has had to issue health hazard warnings due to poor air quality or extreme temperatures. The highest recorded temperature in Traverria is 116 °F on June 28 2021, while the lowest was 18 °F, recorded on December 22nd 2022. Severe weather, such as thunderstorms, are uncommon but occasionally happen during late summer, while tornadoes are nearly, though not completely, impossible.

Environmental Conservation

Environmental conservation in Traverria is of serious importance to the nation. There is one National Wildlife Preserve, Sepchetso Sikaozha’esh (Two Islands) Wildlife Preserve, and 6 national parks, dedicated to conservation of nature and outdoor recreation. The pollution in the Willamette River is also of great concern, and Traverrians strive for a cleaner river and stricter regulations from the USA concerning pollution, as both nations share the river.

Administrative Divisions

Traverria has 3 provinces and 4 special administrative regions. There are proposed plans to administrate Traverria in more localized ways.

Demographics and Economy

The people of Traverria are known as Traverrians. Traverrians come from multiple ethnic backgrounds, but the large majority are classified into two groups, White and Asian. People of white descent make up a large majority of the population, while those of Asian descent make up the second largest and biracial make up the third largest. Traverrians can also be classified into Sokan and Shaulei Traverrians, based off of what sub-culture of Traverria they identify with.

Language

Many languages are spoken in Traverria. Traverrian and English are the two recognized languages in Traverria, but many other languages are spoken and written in the nation. Other languages include Mandarin Chinese, Tibetan, Polish, etc. Braille is also occasionally used. Other languages created by Traverrians are Sokan, Shaulei, and Traverr. Sokan and Traverr are no longer used but the Sokan sub-culture is still widely celebrated. Shaulei is currently being considered an official language by Traverrian officials.

Religion

There is no state religion in Traverria, and most people are atheists. However, Buddhism is the most practiced religion, followed by Christianity. Zen and Vajrayana are the two most widely practiced lineages of Buddhism in Traverria. Traverrian culture has also influenced the way religion is practiced, particularly in Buddhism. Traverrian Buddhism is mainly based on Zen and the Tibetan sects of Buddhism as they are the antiquated Buddhist practices of any Traverrian era. In Traverrian Buddhism, meditation and spiritualism aren't as essential as they may be in other sects, the practice revolves around being an active helper and taking the dharma into everyday situations. The Traverrian sect is a little bit more lenient and mild than most other sects but meditation and other acts are still encouraged. Symbolism resides in most aspects of Traverrian Buddhism, a good example in the placement of 7 clam shells from the Columbia river, with the center shell being a naturally purple shell. This symbolizes the past, present, and future, and the progress of the self. Tea is also very important; tea symbolizes prosperity, growth, and peace. This makes tea the most important and common offering in Traverrian Buddhism.

Economics

The Traverrian economy is very small, as there are not many profitable industries in the nation. Most of the industries in Traverria tend to fall into technology, such as video editing, electronic music production, or coding. Agriculture is also important, with Tea, grapes, berries, fruits, and assorted vegetables and herbs being the main crops. Cut flowers are also a source of income in the agricultural sector. Sand and river rock mining are the two mining industries, though clay mining is being explored. This causes environemntal concern, but Traverria has tried to keep mining at a small, low-impact scale. Traverria uses a mixed economic system, striving to strike a balance between capitalism and socialism with the belief that it will improve healthcare and education, prohibit monopolies, and encourage innovation. The terms "regulated capitalism" and "free-market socialism" have been used to describe Traverria's unique economic system. Traverria uses the Trem (TRT) as thier currency, as well as the US Dollar (USD) and Cascadian-Willamette Volta (CWV).

Foreign Relations

Traverria's sphere of foreign relations is small, as there are very few micronations that are aware of its existence. So far, Traverria is only part of one alliance and has bilateral relations with only one other micronation. The nation strives to join larger alliances and even open embassies in other nations, though this proves to be difficult due to a set of hurdles that inhibit the nation from doing so, such as lack of communication, conflicting ideologies, or the decay of micronationalism in the Willamette Valley Micronational Sector.

Alliances

Traverria is a provisional member of the Grand Unified Micronational and is working to re-create the dissolved Cascadian Union.

Current Alliances

Politics and Government

Traverria is a semi-meritocratic, quasi-democratic constitutional monarchy. It is ruled by an Emperor and Empress (Ko'orlcho and Ko'orlcha respectively in Traverrian). There is a Prime Minister, Secondary Minister, and a Council with representatives of each province, each province getting up to two representatives each with the Secondary Minister being the tie-breaking vote (if there need be). The Imperial Council passes laws and decides judicial cases.

Imperial Council Of Traverria

The Imperial Council of Traverria is the legislative and judicial branch of Traverria. It comprises of two representatives from each province (though there is only one representative from each province as of now). The Head of the Imperial Council is the one who calls bills to the floor, though they hold as much voting and presenting power as their fellow representatives. The Head of the Council also calls meeting to order and adjournment, but must do it within reason or else it will be a violation of the law. Representatives, like ministers, are elected biennially, Citizens may propose acts to the floor of the Council through their representative. The Imperial Council decides federal judicial cases, with a jury of the citizens that rotates regularly.

Political Parties

Most Traverrians adhere to the Monarchic Party's values. However, Traverria strives to have many parties with representation of many different ideologies and beliefs.

Military and Law Enforcement

The Traverrian Military and Law Enforcement divisions are headed by Soto Ngone as the 1st Imperial General of the I.R.T. The Military and Law Enforcement of Traverria is split into four separate divisions:

1: Ne Trezhelrila'ino Trazhemyo Cho Zhokhqa'i (The Department of Land Warfare)

2: Ne Trezhelrila'ino Trazhemyo Cho Zhevakhqa'i (The Traverrian Department of the Air-force)

3: Ne Trezhelrila'ino Trazhemyo Cho Kha'onakhqa'i (The Traverrian Department of Naval Warefare)

4: Ne Trezhelrila'ino Trazhemyo Cho Okhqa'ima Rlakyazhomya (The Traverrian Department of Military Technology)

There are many military bases in Traverria, most being naval bases that are strategically placed alongside the Willamette River. The most important base is named "Khazhem Kazho", meaning "Kazho Military Base", named after the Monarchical family of Traverria. This base was claimed when Traverria expanded across the Willamette River and claimed much of the coastline. The base was put on the southern-most point of Traverria as the River runs north, this gives an easy point to depart and attack/support other nations up-river. The base is claimed by Traverria but a pact between Traverria and Rakozia makes the base useful for both nations as an International Military Base.

Another Base is Toe Island, also called "Khazhem Soto", meaning "Soto Military Base", named after the 1st General and Chief of Armed Forces. The base is a small island inside the Willamette River and serves as a base for a short amount of time as it is rendered useless when the river gets too high.

Traverria has several ministries, though very few have ministers at this point in time.

Culture

The culture of Traverria is very complex, and draws influence from many nations, including influnece from Portland, Oregon. Most adult Traverrians hold jobs as expats in Portland, and Traverrians usually take trips to Portland and the surrounding regions of Oregon and Washington for vacation. The Oregon Coast and Columbia River Gorge are popular vacation destinations for Traverrians.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Traverria is very complex. It contains elements from many kinds of cooking around the world, most notably East Asian, Central European, and American influences. Tea is an essential part of Traverrian culture, with meticulous ceremonies surrounding the beverage. Different varieties and flavors of tea are enjoyed at different times. For example, chai tea and black tea are enjoyed before or during breakfast, while rose tea and jasmine tea are usually used to cleanse your palate after a meal, usually after breakfast or dinner. Some essential ingredients in Traverrian cooking include garlic, ginger, fish, and numerous spices. The Traverrian diet ranges anywhere from a fish and meat-based meal to dishes made completely of vegetables and fruit.

Tea

Tea was touched on briefly in the cuisine section, but the Traverrian admiration and love for tea is very important. As most of Traverria's population identifies as Buddhist, Tea is commonly used as an offering at the alter, and some deities are celebrated because of their association with tea, most notably Green Tara. In Traverrian Buddhism (a sub-sect of Vajrayana Buddhism found in Tibet, Bhutan, and other Himalayan Nations) tea is put in little dishes and set on the alter, sometimes it is incorporated into Traverrian incense and burnt as a powdered incense or a stick incense (though the powdered form is easier to manufacture and is more popular). Tea is also heavily associated with hospitality and prosperity due to it being a popular gift and a formal offering. In addition to tea as a gift, tea is often part of a kyoktseu, which is the Traverrian word for a popular Traverrian custom where those entering your home are given a small gift.

The rise of tea in Traverria was started when tea plants were gifted to the palaces of the two largest cities in Traverria, Trebazha (the capital) and Trekhazheba (the most populous city). Two plants were given two Trebazha and one stayed in Trekhazheba where the tea plants were first acquired. Tea plants are seen as a royal plant and are given lots of care in order to ensure a great process when making the tea ready for consummation. The process is called "Trekhecholro" and follows many steps, after the tea is collected it is cut and pressed into wet sheets of tea paper, with excess tea juices from the cutting process being poured upon the leaves. Then they are dried, and after that they are cut to be in uniform and serving size, and can be easily stacked for transportation and storage. The tea paper can then be steeped in hot water and left in the cup or steeped and then strained using a traditional Traverrian tool much like ceramic Korean tea brewers. The cups used when serving tea are very shallow because the traditional design of the cups allows the very strong tea to be enjoyed in smaller portions.

Sports

The two most common sports in Traverria are Traverrian Wrestling (Trazhelrila'ino Kkhani) and Groundball (Tapyo). These sports are taught and practiced by Traverrians across the nation. Sword sparring is also common, and Traverrian sparring is often regarded as an art form as well as a sport. The most common sports from outside the country, though, are football (soccer), volleyball, cross-country, swimming, and table tennis (ping-pong). Foosball is also enjoyed, notably at the Kazho Palace. The rise of chess in Traverria is increasing as well, proposals for a Traverrian Chess League/Federation are underway, the federation is likely to be called “Trezhakhmati” loosely meaning Traverria Chess, or Traverrian Chess.

Traverria has several sports teams:

  • FC Traverria (soccer)
  • Traverrian Volleyball Team
  • Traverrian Cross Country Team

Music and Art

There are many types of music that Traverrians listen to. The most common is East Asian, classical, EDM, and rock. Emperor Kazho Kalreta notably likes to listen to Korean pop and gugak (traditional Korean) music. Some citizens play musical instruments, such as the violin, guitar, bass, drums, and saxophone, among others. The emperor has proposed created new Traverrian instruments, most notably his idea for a couple bamboo flutes and a zither.

Media and Entertainment

Traverria enjoys most western and some eastern media, and citizens typically watch most movies that Americans enjoy as well. Netflix and Prime Video are very popular, as well as social media platforms. Traverrians consume a lot of music, and many use Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music. Traverria has a YouTube channel, which is the same name as the nation, and it updates Traverria and the rest of the world on recent and upcoming events in Traverria and the surrounding micronational sector[1].
