Besides being the Prince of Arkel, he was also Minister of Foreign Affairs of Flandrensis. Until New Year's Day 2012, he was Secretary-General of the Antarctic Micronational Union.

Creating a new micronation

In February 2009 he became citizen of the Grand Duchy of Flandrensis and later he started his own micronation, the Principality of Arkel. It started with a Heerlijkheid but soon it became a Principality. The Prince claimed "Dean Island" and signed a treaty with Finismund that recognised the independency of Arkel. Arkel was first a vassal state of Flandrensis, but in 2010 they joined the Flandrensisian Commonwealth. In 2012 Maarten took a break in micronationalism to focus on his studies at university, he temporally gave the throne to Nicholas de Mersch d'Oyenberghe. After the the dissolution of the Commonwealth in 2016, the Flandrensian Grand Duke gave the throne back to Maarten. Later that year Maarten left micronationalism definitive.
