A presidential election was held in Children's Group on 21 March 2016 with the votes polled and counted and results being declared on the same date. Incumbent president Varuna Sriraya faced his first-ever and only electoral defeat in any election when his opponent and rival candidate Tanishkaa Patranabish, the Chief Justice defeated him in the election. The duo would face each other in two other presidential elections, first in 2018 and then in 2019. The vice-presidential election was also held along with the presidential election.

Background

The presidential election of March 2016 was held only three months after the 2015 election in which Varuna Sriraya had defeated Sarala Baishya to become the president.

The presidential election was held indirectly by the members of the executive council comprising of the top senior-most leaders of the nation - Varuna Sriraya, Tanishkaa Patranabish, Sarala Baishya, and Anoushkaa Patranabish. Each member's vote has the value of two votes with the total votes being eight. In order to win, a candidate is required to receive five votes.

Election

The election took place on 21 March 2016 and the votes were counted and the results were announced on the same day. Prime Minister Sarala Baishya was the returning officer in the election.

Incumbent President Varuna Sriraya announced his candidacy for a second term in office. While, the incumbent chief justice Tanishkaa Patranabish announced that she would contest the election opposing the second term bid of president Roy.

Chief Justice Tanishkaa Patranabish defeated incumbent president Varuna Sriraya with 75% of the total votes, i.e. 6 votes while defeated candidate Varuna Sriraya received only 25% of the votes, i.e. 2.

Aftermath

Consequent to her election as the president, Tanishkaa Patranabish stepped down as the chief justice and was subsequently replaced by outgoing president Varuna Sriraya. On 21 March, Tanishkaa Patranabish took oath as the president for the second time and after four years from her first term between 2010 and 2012.

Tanishkaa Patranabish would then receive an unprecedent consecutive term in May after she would be unopposed elected in the May 2016 presidential election.
