In the Republic of New Melanesia, a Member of Parliament is someone elected to serve a term in the Assembly of the Republic which is the unicameral parliament of New Melanesia.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a term as an MP, one must be a citizen in the Republic of New Melanesia and be deemed of good moral character. One must also have a good comprehension of the English language. Typically MPs are members of political parties, as it makes it easier for individuals to be elected as the assembly uses the proportional representation system.

Title

Members of government in the assembly are formally styled as "The Honourable". However opposition members typically aren't issued any formal style.

Responsibilities

MPs are considered to have two duties, or three if they belong to a political party. Their primary responsibility is to act in the national interest. They must also act in the interests of the people where this does not override their primary responsibility. Finally, if they belong to a political party, they may act in the interests of that party.
