The Minister of Finance (Hindi: वित्त मंत्री), commonly shortened to Finance Minister is the minister in the Cabinet of Vishwamitra who is responsible for overseeing the nation's economy, financial infrastructure, management. The minister is the head of the Ministry of Finance. The first Minister of Finance was Tanishkaa Patranabish who was appointed on 15 April 2007 following the establishment of the ministry and is till date the longest-serving minister. The current Minister of Finance is Deputy Prime Minister Princess Sarala Baishya who was appointed on 13 October 2023.
The Minister of Finance is often assisted by a junior minister, titled as the Minister of State for Finance who acts as the deputy to the Finance Minister and the second highest office holder in the Ministry of Finance.
History of office
The Minister of Finance has been the head of the Ministry of Finance since its formation on 15 April 2007 and is one of the longest-continuing ministerial positions in the cabinet. The first minister was Tanishkaa Patranabish who is till date the longest serving finance minister. Often prime ministers like Sarala Baishya, Dhrubajyoti Roy, Tanishkaa Patranabish and Anoushkaa Patranabish served as ministers of finance.
Role and duties
The minister is usually one of the most senior members of Cabinet and a member on the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The minister is seen as one of the people most responsible for formulating Vishwamitra's nation's economy, financial infrastructure, management, as they along with other relevant ministers advise the Prime Minister in developing the national economy and formulating laws and policies to develop the economy and economic infrastructure, and also acts as the government's main spokesperson on financial subjects. The minister is also the principal advisor to the Rashtradhyaksh on matters on finance. Prior to 2020, the ministers of finance also tabled the National Finance Budget and Cultural Budget, later transformed to the National Statements on the floor of the house.
The minister along with their deputy, the minister of state for finance, preside over the following departments and agencies which fall under the jurisdiction of the ministry:
- Department of the National Budget
- Department of Economic Development
- Department of Financial Planning
List of ministers
Seventeen individuals have served as the Minister of Finance since the establishment of the ministry on 15 April 2007. Out of those seventeen individuals, four served as a minister as an additional ministry during their tenure as the Prime Minister. The first occupant of the office was Tanishkaa Patranabish who also holds the record of being the longest-serving minister of finance with a tenure of more than 7 years. She also holds the record of being appointed as the finance minister for the most number of terms. The tenure of the shortest minister is that of Liam Alexander who held the portfolio for less than a day (eight hours approximately).
The current minister is Deputy Prime Minister Princess Sarala Baishya who has been in office since 13 October 2023.
