The Monarchy of the Grand Duchy of Portucale, commonly referred to as the Portucale Monarchy, is the constitutional form of government by which an absolute hereditary sovereign reigns as the Head of State of the Grand Duchy of Portucale.

The monarch and their immediate family undertake various official, ceremonial, diplomatic and representational duties. As the monarchy is absolute, the individual on the throne hold absolute power over the nation but typically uses it based on advice of Portucale Government Staff. The Monarch is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Portucale.

History

Establishment

The monarchy was established on the 15th of December, 12 days after the establishment of the nation which was initially established as a Semi-Presidential Republic.

Monarchs

Role

Appointment of the Prime Minister

The Grand Duke or Duchess has the duty of appointing the Prime Minister of Portucale. Typically they choose the leader of the largest party after a General Election or whomever may command the most confidence in the Assembly of State. However the monarch may appoint who they please.

Dissolution of Parliament

The monarch may dismiss Parliament and this may be at he request of the current Prime Minister or after a referendum that votes in favour of Parliament being dismissed. After a Dissolution of Parliament happens, there will either be another election to re-elect a Prime Minister or the Monarch will take total control of the country until a new Prime Minister has been appointed.

Awarding Honours

The monarch may award honours to those they please, typically those who have committed acts of bravery and/or valour as well as those who have attained meritorious service to the nation.

Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces

As the monarch is Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces they have the power to take control of the Armed Forces and override the Chief of Defence Staff. Normally this only happens on and with advice of senior defence staff.

Succession

Upon the death of a sovereign, their heir immediately and automatically succeeds and the accession of the new sovereign is publicly proclaimed by the Prime Minister, the Spokesman of the Monarch or a senior advisor or government official.

Style

The present monarch's full title is "Colin of Portucale, of the Grand Duchy of Portucale".

The monarch is typically addressed as "His/Her Grace" and they may also chooses his or her regal name, which doesn't have to be their first name.
