The Governorate of North Coast, known colloquially as The North Coast or Rye is a Governorate of the Kingdom of Fontasia. Its capital is the city of Rye. It has a total population of 6. The Governorate was originally two different Governorates, respectively the Governorate of Rye and the Governorate of Cullenbor before being merged into one combined Governorate on 18 February 2023. North Coast is a rising Fontasian governorate in political, social, economic and cultural growth. It is also now the largest Fontasian governorate in terms of land area.

Brief History

Assemblians have visited the North Coast since the times of the Fontasian Republic, however no major efforts were made originally to colonize the region. After the formation of the First Assemblic Empire, the region around Rye was colonized in 2016. Two years later, in 2018 the settlement of Cullenbor was established several miles north of Rye, and the region was explored more.

After 2018, until 2022 the region was largely ignored by Assemblians and became a near abandoned colony. The North Coast miraculously survived the Great Liberation in 2021, and became the Fontasian governorates of Rye and Cullenbor on 1 March 2022.

In May 2022, the Fontasian government sent an expedition to the Governorate of Rye, staking its claim to the region permanently. In July 2022 a sporting event was held at Rye as well, known as the Rygionic Games. The team who won the competition was from Fontum, sparking a brief spike in Fontasian nationalism.

The North Coast governorates became the target of new proposals of colonization and Fontasian expansionism into New Hampshire. In December 2022, the Rye Colonialism Project was officially established, planning on thoroughly exploring and colonizing the region by 2025. The territories of Odiorne, Westland, Itapi and Tallus were created too, to eventually be integrated as parts of the Kingdom of Fontasia.

On 18 February 2023, the Governorates of Rye and Cullenbor, as well as the Odiorne Territory were merged into the Governorate of North Coast.

Government

The Governorate of North Coast has never had an elected Governor, as with its predecessor Governorates. It has also never participated in a Praetorial election as one singular governorate. However in Praetorial elections of the Governorates of Rye and Cullenbor, the Governorate of Rye sided with varying political parties, notably the the Populist Party of Fontasia in Spring 2022 and the Free Fontasia Party in Fall 2022. The Governorate of Cullenbor consistently remained an Ergatist Party stronghold in both elections

As of 2023, there are six municipalities in the Governorate of North Coast.

Geography

The North Coast is an exclave completely surrounded by the United States state of New Hampshire, one of the few Fontasian territories outside of the State of Massachusetts. It is located approximately 10 miles north of Salicium, Salicia, 35 miles northeast of Dobrok, Dobrok and 67 miles northeast of Fontum, Fontasia. The North Coast is a coastal territory, spanning a major part of the New Hampshire coastline.

The North Coast is known for its grey-sand beaches, rough surf and many inlets and cliffs. A single road runs along the coastline, that provides scenic view of the many beaches colloquially referred to as the Fontasian Riviera. Moving inland, there is an abundance of swampland and marshes, notably the Daupova, Kuvalar and Odiorne Marshes. Further inland there is mostly forests and wildlands.

The 43 degree north latitude bissects the Governorate at Kuvalarport, and was originally the border between the Governorate of Rye and Governorate of Cullenbor.

The climate of the North Coast is a cooler climate compared to the rest of other Fontasian territories, notably for its much colder ocean water and latitude. North Coast is known for its rather dreary weather. A phenomenon occurs in summer where cold water meets hot inland air, causing a dense fog to form over much of the North Coast coastline, this also occurs in Salicia as well.

Culture

The culture of the North Coast is different than the rest of Fontasia, however currently its is trying to be blended with Fontasian culture. Due to its proximity to the Canadian province of Quebec, in summer months countless amounts of Quebecois flock to the coastline, and Quebecois-American French culture is also present in the region for notable events such as Mardi-Gras. Major activities in the Governorate include beachgoing and kayaking in the marshes.
