Old Guard and New Guard

The terms "Old Guard",[a] "New Guard", and, less commonly, "Middle Guard", are nebulous terms used to denote hypothetical generations of the MicroWiki community. Though it was their original meaning, they are not to be confused as generational timespans, as they are rather terms used in the context of denoting age differences between members of the MicroWiki community: Old Guard refers to "older community members", New Guard to "newer community members", and Middle Guard – which is less commonly used – refers to community members who are "in-between" the two guards (generations).

The terms have been repeatedly used throughout the history of the MicroWiki community.

Etymology

The term Old Guard is likely to derive from the noun 'old guard', which means a person that is more conservative and unwilling to accept new ideas compared to their peers. New Guard contrasts this noun by replacing 'old' with 'new' to represent a community that is changing or more accepting of new ideas compared to the Old Guard. Middle Guard is thus a member of the MicroWiki community who identifies as being in-between (in the middle of) the two guards.
