The Most Excellent Order of the Vishwamitra (Hindi: विश्वामित्र मानपदवी, IAST: Vishvaamitra Manapadvi) is an chivalric and state order of the State of Vishwamitra established on 3 June 2020 by Rashtradhyaksh Tanishkaa Patranabish. It recognizes distinguished personal service to the monarch of the state, members of the royal families, or senior representative of the monarch.

It is at present awarded to men and women who hold high office or who render extraordinary or important service to the nation. The rulers of the royal states, former prime ministers are appointed as GCV; while members of the royal families, privy councilors, members of the government, ambassadors, etc. are regularly appointed to the other grades of the order.

The order was formally abolished on 24 October 2022 by a royal decree issued by the Rashtradhyaksh.

History

Following the establishment of the monarchy in June 2020, the entire existing honours system was restructured and a new honours system was established by Rashtradhyaksh Tanishkaa Patranabish on 3 July 2020. The Order of the Vishwamitra was established alongside the Royal Family Order of Vishwamitra and the Order of the Lotus as the then third highest state order. It was initially created as a single grade order of Member Special Class to recognize valuable services to the monarch and the government. The first induction was made on 3 July 2020 upon Princess Anoushkaa, then Prime Minister and Prince Phillip, the Foreign Minister of Pibocip, both of whom would later receive the Grand Cordon grade. Following the introduction and creation of other chivalric orders, the Order of the Vishwamitra was demoted to its existing status of being the fifth highest order of chivalry.

In February 2021, the order was restructured and two grades were created: Grand Cordon (to be reserved for rulers of the states and former prime ministers) and Grand Cross (formerly Member Special Class, to be conferred on government officials). The order was to be conferred in honorary capacity on foreign leaders. Later the same year, the other grades of Companion (formerly Knight/Dame Commander), Commander, and Member were introduced and the honorary grade was abolished. Initially, the order was accompanied with a Knighthood but was later abolished.

In March 2021, Rashtradhyaksh Varuna Sriraya created the Royal Vishwamitran Chain "as a personal decoration for royal personages and a few eminent subjects". Though related, it is considered entirely distinct from the order.

Composition

The Rashtradhyaksh was at the apex of the Order of the Vishwamitra as its Sovereign, followed by the Grand Master; the latter position was created in 2020 and was occupied by Varuna Sriraya until his election as Rashtradhyaksh and currently by Bishnu Chetry. Below the Grand Master, is the Chancellor, held by one of the Rajpramukhs.

Thereafter follow those honoured with different grades of the order, divided into five levels: all having post-nominal letters and. Foreigners are also admitted into the order.

Prior to 2021, the grades of Grand Cordon and Grand Cross were classified as Members Special Class.

List of officers

The current officers of the Order of the Vishwamitra are as follows:

Insignia

Badge of the Grand Cordon grade.

Upon admission into the Order of the Vishwamitra, members are given various insignia. Common for all members is the badge, which is an octagram with a central medallion depicting on a blue background a dove topped by three fleurs-de-lys. However, there are variations on the badge for each grade of the order: Grand Cordon and Grand Cross wear the badge and a sash passing from the right shoulder to the left hip; male Companions and male Commanders wear the badge on a ribbon at the neck; and women in all grades below Grand Cross wear the badge on a bow pinned at the left shoulder. Further, the size of the badge varies by rank, that for the higher classes being larger, and Grand Cordon, Grand Cross and Companions have their octagrams surrounded by a star: for Grand Cordon, an eight-pointed gold star; for Grand Cross, an eight-pointed gold star with smaller rays between each arm; and for Companions, a six-pointed silver star with gold rays between each arms.

The order's ribbon is blue with red-white-red stripe edging (for Grand Cordon) and red-white stripe edging for the other grades which is the only difference in the highest two grades. The ribbon bars bear rosettes to indicate the various grades of the order.

Eligibility and appointment

Membership in the Order of the Vishwamitra is conferred by the reigning monarch with advice from the Grand Mistress and Chancellor on those who have performed personal service for the sovereign, any member of their family, or any of their representatives. Rulers of the states receive the order's highest grade of Grand Cordon upon their installation in addition to former prime ministers who are appointed soon after their relinquishing the office of the prime minister. Members of the government, including the Prime Minister and other ministers are appointed in their tenure so after other officials.

Foreigners equivalent to heads of government and other ministers are usually appointed to the order. Foreign heads of state are rarely conferred with the Order of the Vishwamitra.

Persons have been removed from the order at the monarch's command, and mostly upon the advice of the Honours Forfeiture Committee. Chandrachur Basu, a former Administrator of Chandril, was the first to be stripped of his appointment in 2021 following his actions against the state.

Precedence and privileges

Members of all rankings of this order are assigned positions in the order of precedence, ranking above all others members of equal rankings of whichever orders. Consorts, childs and childs-in-law also feature on the order of precedence; relatives of members, however, are not assigned any special precedence. Generally, individuals can derive precedence from their parents or consorts as long as the recipient lives.
