The President of the Pinangese Republic (Italian: Presidente della Repubblica Pinanghese), is the ceremonial head of state of Pinang. Following an amendment to the constitution approved by a referendum, the president is directly elected from the election following this change.
Powers
Apart from being the head of state, the President of the Republic also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and represents the nation in foreign affairs.
As per the Constitution, the President has the right to propose legislation to the Parliament, signs or returns laws for reconsideration (suspensive veto), appoints as Prime Minister a member of the Executive Council, who was elected by it and on the Prime Minister's proposal, assigns members to a Ministry.
The President also appoints generals, the supreme command of the Armed Forces (after consulting the Executive Council), calls referenda, appoints Administrators of Territories (with the Prime Minister's countersignature), may dissolve the Parliament (either if the Prime Minister grants his countersignature, if the Parliament passes a vote of no-confidence against the Executive Council, if the Speaker wasn't elected for 15 days, if the Parliament passes "self-dissolution" and for quite a few other reasons), the President can, with the consent of the Prime Minister call and preside over sessions of the Executive Council (so far, only Mišo used this prerogative).
Most of the presidential powers are exercised are at the President's sole discretion, however, it hasn't been uncommon for Presidents to seek advice or consult other state officials before exercising their powers.
Election
The President is directly elected through the instant runoff system.
