The Republic of Aeonia was a short-lived state, seceding from the Concordian Republic on November 21, 2021. Despite the Concordian state of Aeonia being referred to as just Aeonia, the Republic of Aeonia is only ever styled as 'the Republic'. The Republic of Aeonia was a direct result of the Aeonian War, being ruled by the former Governor of Aeonia, McKenzie Arra.

History

The history of the Republic of Aeonia is deeply intertwined with that of war in the Concordian Republic. It was considered by McKenzie Arra when she was an informal Governor during the Guardsman's War. However, the Republic of Aeonia was not realised until the Aeonian War.

First independence

Beginning at 5:55 pm, this war saw the state of Aeonia secede from the Concordian Republic. President McKenzie Arra considered a kingdom while seceding, however, decided on a Republic. It is still unknown whether or not she truly intended to engage with democracy if her secession was ultimately successful. Following the futile resistance of Arra, Callum Russell pushed back toward Aeonia. The President of the Concordian Republic reclaimed the land of Aeonia only two minutes later. McKenzie, however, was determined to secede again.

Second independence

At 5:58 pm, she again declared independence, blocking Russell from reclaiming the territory. She then pushed forward into the New Concordia Federal District, where she took the northwest at 6:03 pm and made it the new capital of the 'Republic of Tramp'. This was just another name for the Republic of Aeonia and is not generally recognised as a separate entity. This caused a brief withdrawal and stronghold strategy from Callum Russell's troops, who eventually realised the Republic of Aeonia's forces was not strong enough to hold their position. A quick push forced the Republic of Aeonia out of the New Concordia Federal District, and at 6:07, the rest of Aeonia was annexed by the Concordian Republic.

Post-war period

Following the war, the Republic of Aeonia was officially dissolved when McKenzie Arra signed the Treaty of Aeonia on 23 November 2021. The treaty also placed restrictions on the capacity of states to secede, however also granted more rights to states, especially if rejoining the Concordian Republic. Following the war, McKenzie Arra lost the Governorship of the state of Aeonia. It is considered unlikely the Republic of Aeonia will ever exist again.

Government

The Republic of Aeonia was governed by an autocracy. The regime called itself democratic, however, its actual intent for the future was not entirely clear. President McKenzie Arra ruled for the Republic's 11-minute existence and constituted its military force. Due to the nation's short lifespan, no opportunities arose to enter into diplomatic relations with other nations.

Geography and climate

The geography and climate of the Republic of Aeonia is, of course, identical to the Concordian state of Aeonia. It was split into two environments. Its eastern section was characterised by many jarrah and marri trees (eucalypts). A seasonal brook ran through the centre, however, did not flow during the Republic of Aeonia's lifespan. The western section was dominated by open, grassy fields. On one field, a range of small dirt hills was visible. The other contained a small plateau, as well as a river-level heavily vegetated area. The Canning River runs through the western section and the Ibis Brook on its border.

In terms of climate, the area that made up the Republic of Aeonia suffered the same as much of the Concordian Republic. Bushfires ripped through the east in 2011, and have seasonally endangered the area. The Canning River flooded in July 2021, and high water levels continued on until around the Aeonian War. The lowest recorded temperature in the area during its lifespan is estimated to have been between 22-27°C.

Economy and culture

The short-lived Republic of Aeonia was still able to generate little income. This was entirely constituted by a little slate collected during the Republic's second retreat, back into Aeonia. This was passed on as a personal asset of McKenzie Arra before the war's end. The gathering of slate spawned an idea, eventually leading to Aeonia Slate, a company operated by Arra since March 2022. The culture was similar to that of the Concordian Republic, however overall was not well developed.

Micropatrology

A matter of internal discussion within Concordia was the Republic of Aeonia's status in terms of micropatrology. Some considered it to be a fully independent nation of micronational status, a point of view which was corroborated by the immediate actions of Callum Russell in his statements against it. It has also been described as a rebel movement, one which has no legal basis for its claims over the land. An issue frequently pointed out with this argument is that it could also annul the Concordian Republic's claims to independence.

The general retrospective consensus of Concordian academics is that the Republic of Aeonia was a nanonation, a state defined as having seceded from a parent micronation which does not recognise its claim to sovereignty. A nanonation is to a micronation what a micronation is to a macronation. In addition to being a near-perfect descriptor of the Republic of Aeonia, it also broadly encompasses the other two arguments. As a rebel group it was largely considered not legal, one of the prerequisites to nanonation status. It also overlaps the first argument, as it was a territory claimed previously by Concordia regardless of where it declared independence from.
