A general election was held in Sabia and Verona on 26 May 2019 to renew all members of the Atanói, the national parliament. As a result of the dissolution of the National Artists' Guild in 2018, the 2019 election was the third-ever general election in Sabia and Verona's history to be contested by only two parties, after the 2012 and 2015 general elections.
The election resulted in a majority for the left-leaning Democratic Party, led by Apollo Cerwyn, who became the 9th Prime Minister of Sabia and Verona and formed the 12th government.
Electoral system
Since 2017, following the adoption of a new constitution, the Sabioveronese Parliament has used a party-list proportional representation system with two multi-member legislative districts corresponding to the geographical boundaries of the City of Alios and the Gonn Region, the two administrative regions of Metropolitan SiV. Following an amendment to the 2017 electoral law approved in January 2018, the Parliament has consisted of 23 seats; 10 for Alios and 13 for Gonn.[1]
As all other electoral processes in Sabia and Verona, the 2019 election will be organized and overseen by the Electoral Commission (iderobók), an autonomous organ whose existence was mandated by the 2017 constitution. Since 2017, the president of the Electoral Commission has been Maximilien Gauvier.[2]
Background
At the 2018 general election, the newly created Democratic Party became the largest party in Parliament, with 11 seats – but it fell short of the necessary 12-seat majority to form a government on its own. The Liberals, who had been in government since 2017, lost considerable support and became the second-largest party in Parliament, but leader Noa Dargany struck a confidence and supply agreement with the National Artists' Guild, and was able to remain as Prime Minister, forming the 10th government on 28 May 2018.[3][4]
In September 2018, Dargany began facing pressure from within her party to deliver results on the New Frontier plan negotiations with the Opposition. New Frontier, a plan to expand Sabia and Verona's territorial claims in the South, had been a major campaign issue for the Liberals in 2018.[5] The breakdown of the negotiations led to a sector of the Liberal bloc in Parliament, led by former party leader Andrew Blackhorse, to openly revolt against Dargany.[6] On 1 October, Blackhorse formally challenged Dargany's leadership, and on 7 October he won the leadership contest to become the new party leader.[7][8] Blackhorse and his cabinet were confirmed by Parliament on 10 October.[9]
On 5 April 2019, the Electoral Commission set the date for the 2019 election on 26 May 2019.[10]

Results
The election resulted in major gains for the Democratic Party, which gained a seat and crossed the threshold for a majority.[11]

Aftermath and government formation
The election resulted in a clear majority for the Democrats, whose leader, Apollo Cerwyn, was shortly afterwards granted the King's mandate to form the 12th government of Sabia and Verona. The 5th Parliament convened for the first time on 3 June 2019, and Cerwyn's government took office the same day.[11]
