The Federal Republic of Georgienstine (French: République fédérale de Georgienstine), formerly known as the Social Republic of Georgienstine, is a self-declared sovereign state primarily located in North America and Europe. Georgienstine is a federal republic and a representative democracy with three separate branches of government including a unicameral legislature. It consists of seven states and eight self-governing territories. Georgienstine has two official languages, English and French.

Government and politics

Georgienstine is a federal republic of seven states and eight territories. In the federalist system, citizens are usually subject to three levels of government: federal, state, and local. In all cases, executive officials are elected by a plurality vote of citizens, and legislative officials are elected with proportional representation.

The government is regulated by a system of seperation of powers defined by the Georgienstinian Constitution, which serves as the country's supreme legal document. The original text of the Constitution establishes the structure and responsibilities of the federal government and its relationship with the individual states. The Constitution has 7 articles; the first five articles, which organize the government, and the sixth article form the central basis of Georgienstinians' individual rights. Laws and governmental procedures are occasionally subject to judicial review and any law ruled by the courts to be in violation of the Constitution is voided.

The federal government comprises three branches:

  • Legislative: The unicameral National Congress, makes federal law, declares war, has the power of the purse, and has the power of impeachment, by which it can remove sitting members of the government.
  • Executive: The president is the head of state and government, the commander-in-chief of the military, can veto legislative bills before they become law (subject to congressional override), and appoints the members of the Cabinet (subject to National Congress approval) and other officers, who administer and enforce federal laws and policies.
  • Judicial: The Supreme Court and lower district courts, interpret laws and overturn those they find unconstitutional Two Supreme Court judges are appointed by the president, two by the National Congress, one by the Majority Caucus and one by the Minority Caucus. In addition, both district court judges are appointed by the president (subject to National Congress approval).

The National Congress has 16 members, elected based on proportional representation of political parties, with a 6.25% electoral threshold.

Political divisions

The 7 states are the principal political divisions in the country. Each state holds jurisdiction over a defined geographic territory, where it shares sovereignty with the federal government. A new state may be accepted if a constitutional amendment is passed. The voters in states choose the president of Georgienstine. Citizenship is granted at birth in all states. The states of Harrisburg and Salem have their respective constiutions. All states are part of the National Governors' Association (NGA).

There are 8 territories that are currently part of Georgienstine. Territories hold jurisdiction over a defined geographic territory, where it shares sovereignty with the federal government. Unlike states, territories do not need to be approved and may be simply claimed for Georgienstine. Territories have much more autonomy than states, however, they can be expelled from the union. People in territories cannot vote for the president but may register in a state, which allows them to vote.

On 15 December 2022, for 8 hours, the state of Salem illegally seceded from Georgienstine.

Parties and elections

Georgienstine has operated under a two-party system for most of its history, though smaller parties have won seats and governorships.

In Georgienstinian political culture, Georgienstine First (formerly known as the Nationalist Party) is considered the right-wing party, whereas the Left Bloc is considered left-wing. The Left Bloc has been preceded by several parties. There has often been a libertarian party, with the Federalist Party currently being that party. Though at the moment, the Federalist Party is very closely associated with the Left Bloc as they run under the Vision Georgienstine joint list.

The Christian Democrats of Georgienstine is a party with congressional representation that adheres to Christian democracy. The National Guard for the Workers of Georgienstine (NGWG) is a distributist and traditionalist party. Both run under the Christian Workers' Alliance joint list. The Labour Democratic Party is a social democratic party, which used to be very popular but was deregistered in October 2021 and brought back in December 2022.

The red belt is often used to describe the states of Harrisburg, Nassau, Salem, and sometimes Augustine, which formerly often voted for left-wing parties. Since then, these states have become much more pro-GF partially due to the "Red belt exodus", where many prominent members of the left-wing parties joined Georgienstine First.

Alexandre Olivier of Georgienstine First is currently serving as president with Roy Jackson as vice-president after being elected in the 2023 Georgienstinian presidential election. Leadership in the National Congress includes Majority Leader Matthew Tonna and Minority Leader Nicolas Caiazzo. The speaker's office is currently held by Addison O'Halloran.

Foreign relations

Georgienstine has signed 30 foreign relations treaties with other micronations and is a former member of the Cupertino Alliance, Reformed Intermicronational Confederation, Union of Four and Union of Five. Georgienstine is is a partner with four associated states, though they are all defunct.

In November 2020 and January 2022, certain congresspeople presented acts in order for Georgienstine to apply for membership in the Grand Unified Micronational. In November 2020, the act was not heard by the National Congress and in January 2022, the act was defeated 4-8 with 4 not voting.

The current Secretary of State is Matthew Tonna.

Georgienstine's companies are mostly media or polling companies and they make little to no revenue.

Personal transportation is dominated by automobiles, which operate on a network of one driveway. Georgienstine is also home to Georgienstinian National Railways, which is composed of one circular train track modelled at a reduced scale. In addition, there are improvised dirt roads and a bridge out of sticks to traverse the four states that are located in a forest. This system of roads and bridges and known as walkways.

Eras

# Era Length of Era Time Notes
1 Founding era 3 July 2020 - 11 November 2020 4 months, 8 days During this era, Georgienstinian politics were dominated by the right-wing Nationalist Party and the bicameral congress passed numerous bipartisan pieces of legislation to establish the institutions. The opposition was led by the Labour-Democratic Party and then the Movement for Socialism.
2 Opposition era 11 November 2020 - 3 December 2020 22 days The era began with the Movement for Socialism and the Libertarian Party forming the Georgienstine Democratic Coalition to challenge Georgienstine First (former Nationalists), which was allied to the far-right Holy Party. The November 2020 Georgienstinian congressional election was seen as the first competitive election and resulted in a GF victory. However, the Movement for Socialism elected their candidate for speaker after a tie in the vote and a coin was tossed.
3 Divided opposition era 3 December 2020 - 12 January 2021 29 days The era began with the dissolution of the Movement for Socialism and its split into the libertarian New Democratic Party, which the Libertarian Party merged into and the far-left Venceremos. A snap election was called, which resulted in relatively similar results to the last election, though the NDP finished slightly ahead of Venceremos.
4 First two-party era 12 January 2021 - 6 August 2021 6 months, 25 days The era began with the NDP's collapse, and Venceremos's renaming to the Socialist Labour Party. Many former NDP members joined the SLP and the newly-founded Liberal Party. In February 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election, the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party ran a joint list in an attempt to break the two-party system but finished third. After disagreements, the SDP left the coalition and became a key GF ally for the rest of the era. In the 2021 Georgienstinian presidential election, Raphaël Olivier of GF defeated Ben Olson of the SLP in two rounds.
5 Shakeup era 6 August 2021 - 14 December 2021 4 months, 8 days The era began with the August 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election, in which the syncretic Solidarity Party won three seats in an upset, and GF for the first time won a plurality of seats, winning six. GF still formed a majority though, as the Liberals continued caucusing with them. After the election, the SLP merged with the Farmer-Labour Party to form the New Progressive Party. In September 2021, the Liberals merged into the newly-founded libertarian Federalist Party and joined the Minority Caucus, changing the control of Congress over to them and Ben Olson becoming Majority Leader. Four days later, the majority was then changed back, after two congresspeople crossed the floor and Alexandre Olivier became Majority Leader again. In the October 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election, the Federalists almost surpassed the NPP, winning 25% of the vote. Following this result, Olson was removed as Minority Leader and was replaced by federalist May Junkin. The Federalists and the NPP formed the Vision Georgienstine alliance to unite their forces against GF.
6 Second two-party era 14 December 2021 - 26 March 2022 3 months, 12 days The era began with Minority Leader May Junkin's departure from Georgienstine and her replacement by former Minority Leader Benjamin Olson. In this era, the Federalists lost popularity and influence, which allowed the NPP to take back their place as the sole main opponent to GF. Nevertheless, the NPP and Federalists remained allied through the Vision Georgienstine alliance, though the NPP held much more power and influence within the alliance.
7 GF domination era 26 March 2022 - 3 September 2022 5 months, 8 days The era began with the March 2022 Georgienstinian congressional election, in which Georgienstine First won 9 seats and Vision Georgienstine saw major losses due to the rise of the Communist Party and low turnout among its supporters. The newly-elected GF caucus was also very active, allowing for the party's total control of the legislative process. The Communist Party's collapse also accentuated GF's domination. In the July 2022 Georgienstinian congressional election, Georgienstine First received the highest percentage of the vote and seats in a congressional election, winning 65.2% and 11 seats. In the 2022 Georgienstinian presidential election, Raphaël Olivier of GF defeated Ben Olson of the Free Democrats in one round, winning with 59% of the vote.
8 GF-CSDP cooperation era 3 September 2022 - 15 October 2022 1 month, 12 days The era began with the September 2022 Georgienstinian congressional election, in which GF won 48.5% of the vote and 8 seats. Despite winning the election, GF saw major losses, which brought an end to the GF domination era. In this era, GF and the Christian Social Democratic Party, which won 18.2% and 3 seats, were in the same caucus and cooperated on legislation.
9 Third two-party era 15 October 2022 - 2 October 2023 11 months, 17 days The era began with the Christian Social Democratic Party's collapse, allowing Georgienstine First and Vision Georgienstine to retake their positions as the dominant parties in Georgienstine. Throughout this era, numerous short-lived third parties and alliances won congressional seats, such as Centre Georgienstine, the NGWG and the Christian Workers' Alliance, though GF and VG remained in their respective first and second-place positions. In the 2023 Georgienstinian presidential election, Alexandre Olivier of GF defeated Nicolas Caiazzo of the Left Bloc (VG member party) in two rounds.
10 Grand coalition era 2 October 2023 - 7 February 2024 3 months The era began with the October 2023 Georgienstinian congressional election, in which the Purple Front, dominated by the far-left Red Front, won the second most seats mostly due to the sudden arrival of many new citizens invited by the party's leadership, commonly described as "flooding". GF, VG and the Labour Democratic Party, all caucused together for the first time in their history and formed the "grand coalition" to unite against the Purple Front. Following an internal crisis which led to the departure of multiple members, the LDP allied itself with the Purple Front, forming a new alliance named Georgienstine United. In the December 2023 Georgienstinian congressional election, GF won a plurality of seats for the second time in its history but remained in the majority due to the Grand Coalition.
11 First three-party era 7 February 2024 - present 1 month and 26 days The era began with the sudden announcement that the Red Front would be dissolving. In the February 2024 Georgienstinian congressional election, GF retook a majority of seats, with VG back in second place for the first time since June 2023 and the now LDP-dominated GU finishing third. All three parties and alliances won many seats and large percentages of the vote, leading to a three-party system. The unprecedented situation led to the passing of the Caucus Reforms Act, which allowed for the formation of multiple congressional caucuses instead of the two traditional Majority and Minority caucuses.
