The Sovereign Kingdom of Kivinesaar (oftentimes referred to as Kivinesaar) is an island micronation located in the territorial waters of Rhode Island in the United States. It was founded in February 2011 by 4 boys of Estonian descent so much of its language and culture is Estonian based.

Etymology

The name kivinesaar (kehv-in-eh-sar) comes from the Estonian words kivine which means rocky, and saar which means island. When the 4 founders first spotted it, they decided to call it what it was: a rocky island.

History

The Early Days

Kivinesaar's founders were four Estonians named Onders, Olaf, Leif, and Svin who first saw the little island in late 2010. After consulting the government of Rhode Island about its status, they were able to purchase it for around 370 US dollars on February 21, 2011 and promptly declared its independence later that day. Once they had acquired the territory, the first problem the young government had to tackle was the ridiculous amount of seagulls that had taken over the island during its lack of usage. After several failed attempts of relocation however, the government decided to embrace the seagulls presence and named it the national bird.

The Reign of Svin the Mighty and the Black Revolution

After the initial stand-in government had finished its duties, the Kivinesaari people needed to select a leader that would become their new King. In the only democratic election ever to take place in Kivinesaar, the people chose Svin the Mighty (a title he gave himself) to rule. Although the election was held on February 21, 2011, he was not officially instated until March 6, 2011. Svin's reign was disastrous from the very beginning and discontent spread quickly among the population. On April 2, 2011, a series of protests began in the wharf city of Sadamasild which eventually led to a march to the royal palace in Barakk to demand that Svin step down. Before the protesters could reach the city however, they were met by the police force and loyalists who demanded that they turn around. Fighting broke out between the 2 sides, but eventually the protesters broke through and stormed the palace. Svin was caught, attempting to flee into the Rocklands, and was thrown into the frigid ocean amidst cheers from the victorious side. The protesters then turned on the royal palace, a symbol of Svein's oppressive, 27 day reign or terror. They destroyed the door and most of the roof of the palace and to this day it remains unfixed.

The Grand Rebirth

After the fighting had stopped, the remaining Kivinesaaris needed to rebuild what was left of their country. Everyone knew that they could not stand to have a second failure in government and no one really wanted to take the open position of King for fear of another rebellion. After 7 days of anarchy, a young woman named Liisi stepped forward and offered to take the crown. She, after some debate on whether a woman could rule, was eventually accepted and coronated on April 9, 2011. The citizens of Kivinesaar fell in love with their new princess and she has ruled the island as an isolationist state ever since.

The Closed Door

From April 2011 (when Princess Liisi took the throne) until July 2012, the foreign policy of Kivinesaar resembled isolationist principles and not much contact with the outside world was attempted. Instead the Kivinesaari people focused on domestic affairs such as creating a culture that reflected their values and setting up a political system. Additionally this time was spent forming the Vesi, creating sports teams, establishing national holidays, and other things of this nature.

The Door Opens

Kivinesaar underwent a drastic change on July 20, 2012 when Princess Liisi appointed Peter Terras the first Minister of Foreign Affairs, indicating that the secluded nation might be opening up. Later that day, a list of 66 Macronations was released that Kivinesaar had decided to automatically recognize. The nation also seems to be looking to form new micronational relations as well.

Territory

The island of Kivinesaar is divided into 3 administrative districts/cities: Barakk, Sadamasild, and the Rocklands.

Barakk

Barakk is the capital of Kivinesaar, as well as the chief administrative district. There are very selective requirements for living in Barakk and currently, only the 4 most powerful people on the island have residence there: Princess Liisi, Pope Jhon I, Anthony Bazonov, and Peter Terras. Princess Liisi lives in the old royal palace, but has refused to allow it to be repaired. She once stated, "The ruined palace is a constant reminder of mistakes that we have made. If we forget our mistakes, we are destined to make them again." Anthony Bazonov is the captain of the Kivinesaar National Hockey Team and Peter Terras is the commander of the Vesi as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Pope Jhon I is the leader of the state instituted religion, Katolicism.

Sadamasild

Sadamasild is the only other city in Kivinesaar and is home to roughly 80% of the population. Because of its size, all national events are held in Sadamasild and it is unofficially the culture capital of Kivinesaar. It is also the only way on or off the island because its wharf is the only place where boats are able to land.

The Rocklands

Much of Kivinesaar (everything that is not Barakk or Sadamasild) is made up of a tangled mess of jagged rocks and is therefore called the Rocklands. The Rocklands do not serve much of a purpose, but the Kivinesaarians feel that if the rocks are taken away to make room for new cities or projects, then they will no longer be the "rocky island" that the 4 founders saw.

  • It should be noted that no one actually lives on the Kivinesaar as it is a pile of rocks in the bay. The citizens do meet on the island when time permits and the weather is good.

Military

Although Kivinessar is a relatively small entity, it has always been a highly militarized micronation with every citizen (excluding the active Monarch and Pope) being required to serve in times of conflict. In peacetime, the Kivinesaari Naval Defense Force patrol the waters surrounding the island. These 8 men and women, colloquially known as the Vesi, are responsible for the protection of the borders of Kivinesaar. The Vesi fleet consists of a J22, a pair of 420s, and a Laser, which all remain moored in the nearby city of Newport when not in use. The only time that the entire Kivinesaari Army was mobilized was for Operation Rosebud in November of 2011.

Foreign Relations

For more than a year, Kivinesaar remained a hermit kingdom and never sought foreign relations with any other nation (micro or macro). The only body that the Kivinesaarian government had ever contacted was the Rhode Island government for information regarding the purchase of the island. Now Kivinesaar has opened relations and is in the process of acquiring micronational (and hopefully macronational) allies. For more, see Foreign Relations of Kivinesaar.

Culture

Religion

When Princess Liisi took the crown, she brought with her her own bastardized version of Roman Catholicism called Katolicism. This religion followed the basic tenets of Catholicism except that they did not recognize the pope that lived in the Vatican. Instead, the Princess appointed her own pope to lead the religious ceremonies, Pope John I. Katolicism is the mandatory religion for all Kivinesaarians and plays a big part in their daily life. Services are held every Thursday in Sadamasild.

On October 25, 2020, Remus Peroni, taking advantage of the inactivity of the Kingdom and of its sovereign, proclaimed himself as the successor of the Pope John I. He take the name of "Callistus", in honor of the Pope Callistus II, who was Archbishop of the city of Vienne in 1088.

The following day, His Holiness Calixtus released two pontifical documents : an enthronement speech and a motu proprio. Those two redactions was purposed for the dissolution of the Katolicism.

This dissolution was effective on October 26, 2020 and the Pope Callixtus renounce to the pontifical function on this day. Ironically, he made more acts in two days of pontificate than his predecessor John I, who made nothing on nine years of pontificate.

Sport

The national sport of Kivinesaar is ice hockey however, because of the small size of the island, Kivinesaaris are forced to play elsewhere. The Kivinesaar National Hockey Team has yet to play an official game, but has played several scrimmages against local teams from the mainland. They have never won, and often lose by a margin of 6 or more goals. Kivinesaaris also enjoy football (soccer) and every June 13, the whole population divides into two teams and plays a match in Sadamasild. The winning team claims possession of the Lions Cup for one year until they can be challenged for it on the next June 13.
