Succession to the Baustralian throne is determined by descent, sex, legitimacy, and religion. Under common law, the Crown is inherited by a sovereign's children or by a childless sovereign's nearest collateral line. Before 12 May 2019, the monarch and heirs and their consort must have been in communion with the Christian church, be it Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox. King John is the sovereign, and his heir presumptive is the Prince of Kingston. Before December 2022, the line could extend to the Duke of Kingston's half-brother, Justin, however, this was modified upon the change from male-preference to absolute primogeniture.
