A Sultanate is a form of government in which the nation is ruled by a Sultan, a (typically) Islamic ruler who does not claim to rule as Caliph yet remains the highest practical State power in the land. Generally regarded as an unusual form of Monarchy, Sultans may also be rulers of territories within a greater Caliphate.
