Vishwamitra-Aenopia relations (Welsh: Cysylltiadau Vishwamitra-Aenopia, Hindi: विश्वामित्र-एनोपिया संबंध) refer to the bilateral relations formerly maintained by Vishwamitra and the Empire of Aenopia. The official bilateral and diplomatic relations between Vishwamitra and Aenopia were opened on 9 August 2020 following the signing of a treaty of mutual recognition. Relations between Vishwamitra and Aenopia strengthened over the course of 2020 and 2021, as the two nations engaged in a land exchange, exchanges of awards and decorations, and the establishment of internal relations between cities located in both nations. Following the formal establishment and opening of diplomatic missions in the two nations, the strong and cooperative relations were not only re-ensured but also reached to a special level.

Relations began to sour in late 2021, as Simon I supported the motion of no confidence against Varuna whilst the latter served as Chair of the Board of the Cupertino Alliance. Relations continued to collapse following vocal opposition from Aenopia after Vishwamitran support of Matthew Tonna, in which Tonna assumed the position of Speaker of the House, which later resulted in a vote of no confidence against him. The land exchange treaty was nullified on 13 February 2022, before relations collapsed entirely on 14 February 2022 with the nullification of the mutual recognition treaty by both parties. Further attempts to repair relations would fail amidst growing anti-Vishwamitran sentiment within Aenopia.

History

A view of Cangun Llus and the Qaflanan territory of Helyg Cwsg. Cangun Llus was annexed by the State of Vishwamitra on 18 February 2021 as part of the Treaty of Land Exchange between Aenopia and Vishwamitra.

Relations between Vishwamitra and Aenopia started on 9 August 2020 when Aenopia was approached by Sriraya of Vishwamitra with the intention of establishing diplomatic relations between the two nations. As such, Vishwamitra and Aenopia entered into formal bilateral relations with the signing of a treaty of mutual recognition on the same day.[1] Relations between the two nations significantly strengthened following regular discussions between Sriraya and Reeve, the respective monarchs of Vishwamitra and Aenopia, through both internal means and international organisations including the Cupertino Alliance and Grand Unified Micronational.

Relations between the two nations were strengthened further when a land exchange programme was initiated in February 2021 following the ratification of a treaty of land exchange.[2] Following the exchange, Cangun Llus, situated in Northern England, became an overseas territory of Vishwamitra, which was administered by Reeve as a Governor of the monarch of Vishwamitra. Meanwhile, Bryn Glaw, situated in northeast India, became an overseas territory of Aenopia administered by Sriraya as a Governor of the monarch of Aenopia.[3] Additionally, the Aenopian cities of New Llandudno and Rocinante-upon-Afon were paired with the Vishwamitran cities of Rajagriha and Dadara respectively as a part of the GUM's Sister Cities project and Cupertino Alliance's Twin Towns program, outreach programs conducted by the GUM and CA respectively. Reeve was also conferred with the honorary title of Deshabandhu in Vishwamitra[4] for his contributions to the friendship between the two nations, whilst Sriraya was conferred with the Order of New Aberdare.[5]

Ever since our two nations had established formal relations last year, the friendship and relationship grew stronger and very close. During every interaction with you, I had always felt your friendly touch and I can really tell how much I admire you. As we celebrate warm moments between our nations, I confidently look forward to celebrate many other events with Aenopia and further strengthen the bilateral relations between our nations.

— Varuna Sriraya in a celebratory letter to Reeve, 18 May 2021

Projects

Treaty of land exchange

Reeve initially approached Sriraya with the intention of establishing a treaty of land exchange on 18 February 2021. Vishwamitra had previously conducted land exchanges with Monmark, which resulted in the establishment of New Alamo one week prior.[6] Establishing a land exchange agreement would help to bolster relations between the two nations further by expanding upon the pre-existing mutual recognition treaty.

The principles of the land exchange treaty focused on the joint transfer of sovereignty of the claimed lands to the opposite party, which would in turn do the same. In addition, the treaty highlighted the ability for either nation to appoint representatives to represent their territory, in which case being Reeve and Sriraya respectively. Following the exchange, Cangun Llus, situated in Northern England, became an overseas territory of Vishwamitra which was administered by Reeve as a Governor of the monarch of Vishwamitra. Meanwhile, Bryn Glaw, situated in northeast India, became an overseas territory of Aenopia administered by Sriraya as a Governor of the monarch of Aenopia.

The treaty of land exchange was nullified by Sriraya nearly one year following its initial ratification on 13 February 2022, just one day before relations between Vishwamitra and Aenopia were terminated. The territories of Cangun Llus and Bryn Glaw were subsequently ceded back to the United Kingdom and India respectively, before the former territory of Cangun Llus was absorbed into the Qaflanan territory of Helyg Cwsg on 23 February 2022.

Sister cities

Both Vishwamitra and Aenopia participated in the GUM Sister Cities project and Twin Towns program, initiatives conducted by the Grand Unified Micronational and Cupertino Alliance respectively with the purpose of encouraging cooperation between nations via relations between cities. As such, the Aenopian cities of New Llandudno and Rocinante-upon-Afon were paired with the Vishwamitran cities of Rajagriha and Dadara respectively. As the initiatives were conducted outside of Aenopian-Vishwamitran politics, the paired cities maintained their sister city statuses assiged by the GUM and CA following the collapse of relations between the two nations.

Collapse of relations

Relations initially began to falter following the motion of no confidence against Sriraya whilst serving as Chair of the Board of the Cupertino Alliance (CA) in August 2021, of which Reeve had been a co-signatory. The reasons for the motion were due to alleged suspicious conduct on Sriraya's behalf, including accusations of corruption, and the appointment of Qaflanan delegate Thorin Neal due to his apparent lack of criticism of the administration, despite regular criticism of the Chair on occasions before that. Other allegations included the unfulfillment of campaign promises, including membership reform, inadequate session organisation, and inadequete response to internal affairs, most notably in regards to the conduct displayed by Matthew Tonna at the time. However, prior to it being officially presented, Sriraya was alerted about the motion's existence. Shortly thereafter, he released a statement resigning as Chair and naming Lieutenant Chair Tyler Mullins as his successor and interim Chair of the Board.

Dialogue between Reeve and Sriraya ceased in October, before relations between Vishwamitra and Aenopia reached a tipping point following the vote of no-confidence against Vishwamitran Speaker of the House Matthew Tonna on 14 February 2022. Reeve had previously been a vocal critic and opponent of Tonna, following alleged transphobic and islamophobic conduct from Tonna, most notably including the "Maltese ambulance" comment, in which Tonna falsely claimed that "multiculturalists" had hijacked a Maltese ambulance, which was later debunked by several CA delegates. Moreover, various Vishwamitran politicians opposed the motion against Tonna based on the premise that the incidents occurred outside of Vishwamitra, and as such the incidents did not concern Vishwamitran politics.[7]

Sriraya notified Reeve of his wish to terminate the Land Exchange treaty with Aenopia on 13 February 2022 for unspecified reasons. Accordingly, the territories of Bryn Glaw and Cangun Llus were ceded back to India and the United Kingdom respectively on the same day. The mutual recognition treaty was severed by Reeve on 14 February following the notification of Sriraya, primarily as a result of the ongoing motion of no confidence against Tonna and the subsequent conduct of various Vishwamitran politicians. According to the mutual recognition treaty signed by both nations, the nation intending to suspend the treaty must alert the other participant within one week of treaty nullification,[b] however no grace period was provided by either side in practice. Communications between Vishwamitra and Aenopia abruptly concluded following the treaty's nullification.

Aftermath

An attempt to reestablish relations was proposed by Vishwamitra in March 2022, which was accepted favourably by Senedd Aenopia. This subsequently led to the reestablishment of dialouge between both parties via a dedicated group chat for the endeavour, with Vishwamitra being represented by Varuna Sriraya and Tyler Mullins, whilst Aenopia was represented by Simon Reeve and Leon Montan. Despite support in Senedd for the initiation of talks between both parties, some members of Senedd, including the First Minister and Emperor himself, were opposed to the prospect of rekindling relations with Vishwamitra due to a large anti-Vishwamitran sentiment within Aenopia. First Minister Montan would later cite that the reasons for his conduct had nothing to do with the Tonna incident, but rather lay with the conduct of Varuna Sriraya. As such, Montan would later invite various unrelated micronationalists close to the Aenopian delegation, with many being opposed to Vishwamitra as a whole. The Vishwamitran delegation either withdrew or were kicked from the group chat following the unprofessional conduct demonstratied by the Aenopian delegates.

My government in Aenopia vehemently opposes any relations with Vishwamitra. It has been shown time and time again that until there is regime change in Vishwamitra, and Varuna is overthrown, that Aenopia (or, at least, a People's Party-led government) is not interested in relations with Vishwamitra. Thank you, and I no longer see a need for this group chat.

— Leon Montan to the Vishwamitran delegation, 20 March 2022

Following the incident, various "perpetrators" involved in the collapse of talks would be confronted by the Rashtradhyaksh. The following day after the incident, the Rashtradhyaksh would announce that Emperor Simon I[citation needed] and Chris Ramsay would be revoked of their titles, whilst numerous individuals would be banned from the Vishwamitran Discord server for an alleged "Aenopian revolution" stemming from the initial incident. The two were later revoked of their honours on 6 April 2022 based on recommendations from the Honours Forfeiture Committee.[8]
