The Welsh Republic, sometimes the Republic of Wales or just Wales, is a self-declared sovereign nation sometimes known as a Micronation established in early 2023. It is located within the United Kingdom.

The republic is governed as a unitary parliamentary republic. The head of state is the President of Wales and is mostly ceremonial - the incumbent president is Luke Davies. The Prime Minister sits as head of government and is responsible for the majority of day-to-day governance of the republic.

History

The Welsh Republic declared independence from the United Kingdom on 9 January 2023 as a new Welsh state under a republic.

Government and Politics

The nation has always been governed as a parliamentary republic. The president is head of state but plays a largely ceremonial role, with the prime minister and the National Assembly do majority of the day-to-day governance of the nation.

Presidency

The president of the Welsh Republic is the nation's head of state.

The office is largely ceremonial however, has some administrative powers.

The president is appointed by the national assembly and the office's power includes:

  • Appointing the Government (Typically On the Advice of the National Assembly)
  • Appointing All Judges to the Judiciary
  • Convening and Dissolving the National Assembly
  • Signs or Vetos Bills
  • Represents the State in Foreign Affairs
  • Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
  • Power of Pardon

Prime Minister

The prime minister is the head of government in the republic. They are a member of the national assembly and chair the cabinet. They oversee policy development and coordination, exercise government functions through the Welsh Cabinet and appointing senior members of the civil service as well as other duties.

The prime minister is appointed by the president.

National Assembly

The national assembly is the unicameral legislature of the republic. The government are accountable to the assembly and all members of the cabinet, including the Prime Minister, sit in the assembly.

The assembly is elected by party list proportional representation. The assembly can be called or dissolved and general elections can be called by the president on the advise of the prime minister.

Armed Forces

The armed forces of the Welsh Republic are the primary defence forces of the nation. The president serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

The armed forces consist of an Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps and each have their own specialised role in helping defend the nation. The armed forces are overseen by the ministry of defence and are managed by the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Economy

The Welsh Republic uses the Welsh Dollar as its national currency. The Welsh Dollar is printed by the national bank based on policy set by the government's treasury.

Culture and Media

Culture in the Welsh Republic, as a Welsh micronation, is very heavily influenced by the Culture of Wales.

The nation's patron saint is Saint David.
