The Cabinet of Tanaau is the senior decision making body of the Government of Tanaau. It is a committee of the privy council. The cabinet is chaired by the prime minister and its members consist of secretaries of state and other senior government ministers. Members are appointed by the monarch, usually on the prime minister's nomination, and are conventionally members of a house of parliament.
The Ministerial Code and Tanaauan law binds the behaviour and conduct of ministers.
The work of the cabinet is scrutinised by the shadow cabinet.
History
The basis of the Cabinet was established on 17 November 2023, by the Constitution of Tanaau. The actual ministries of the cabinet were formed at the order of King Colin I after the constitution's ratification.
Composition
The prime minister nominates the membership and determines the attendees of the Cabinet. Secretaries of state are de facto always cabinet members, and other ministers can be designated as "attending cabinet" - meaning they are not full cabinet ministers but are able to attend and take part in cabinet meetings.
The Cabinet is a committee of the privy council so cabinet ministers are ex officio privy councillors.
Senior civil servants and special advisors are often invited to observe Cabinet meetings, but do not take part in discussion.
Importance
Cabinet ministers, like all ministers, are appointed and may be dismissed by the monarch without notice or reason, usually on the advice of the prime minister. The allocation and transfer of responsibilities between ministers and departments is also generally at the prime minister's discretion. The Cabinet is always led by the prime minister, who nominates ministers for office and determines the cabinet's agenda.
Cabinet ministers are bound by the conventional principles of collective and individual ministerial responsibility. This leaves a lot of decision making power in the hands of the prime minister.
The Cabinet is the ultimate decision making body of the executive.
