Historical Burgundy is a state entity that has existed in Western Europe for many centuries. At first it was one of the so-called "barbarian kingdoms", which was called Kingdom of the Burgundians, then a Kingdom of Burgundy within the Frankish state. After the partition of Charlemagne's empire, part of the Burgundian lands became part of the West Frankish Kingdom and later became the Duchy of Burgundy. The other part entered the kingdom of Emperor Lothar I, and later divided into Upper and Lower Burgundy. Then these states reunited into the Kingdom of Burgundy (Kingdom of Arles), which eventually gradually lost its independence and was subordinated to foreign monarchies: France and the Holy Roman Empire. In various historical epochs, the borders of Burgundy were constantly changing and it included various lands on the territory of modern France, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and other countries. The most successful and striking in history was the Duchy of Burgundy which, although formally considered a vassal of the French king, but during the reign of the Valois-Burgundy dynasty became a de facto independent state, competing with France. The Duchy of Burgundy at the peak of its power included vast territories in Western Europe, including the so-called Burgundian Netherlands. History did not allow Burgundy to survive to the present day, and for various political reasons and factors, Burgundy disappeared from the political map of Europe.
The Grand Duchy of Burgundians was founded on February 13, 2024. The aim of the project is to restore memory and draw attention to the history of medieval Burgundy. The micronation was created in memory of a distant historical era, and is intended for fans of the history of medieval Europe, chivalry, heraldry. A micronation is a non-state sovereign entity with a status determined by the Declaration of Sovereignty. The Grand Duchy of Burgundians is a micronation without a physical territory and exists in a virtual space, renouncing any territorial claims to the historical lands of Burgundy. The idea of creating a micronation belongs to His Royal Highness Grand Duke Michael, in memory of medieval Burgundy. Interestingly, according to the founder of micronation, several relatives of the Grand Duke have an amazing portrait resemblance to representatives of the House of Valois-Burgundy.
Etymology
The name of the micronation comes from medieval Burgundy. Important: the name does not sound "Grand Duchy of Burgundy", but "Grand Duchy of the Burgundians". This demonstrates, firstly, the spiritual connection of the micronation with historical Burgundy, and secondly, emphasizes the status of the Grand Duchy: a micronation without the physical territory of Burgundy.
