Turkey, officially known as the Ottoman State (Turkish: Devlet-i Othmânié [dev.leti osˈmɑːnije]) is a state located in Southeast Europe and West Asia. The state used to control parts of southeastern Central Europe, northern Africa, Middle East and parts of the East Indies from the early 16th to the early 20th century. It borders the Black Sea to the north; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to the southeast; Syria, Kurdistan and the Mediterranean Sea to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and Greece, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, Adriatic and Ionian Sea to the northwest.
