The Election

The 2012 Hamlinian Presidential Election is an election that took place in the Hamlinian Republic to elect a new President of the Hamlinian Republic. The election took place on July 12, 2012, while the MicroWiki voting took place on June 2, 2012.

The election cycle started noticeably earlier than the 2011 Elections and saw a more widespread field of candidates. The cycle began with current President Casey Hamlin entering the race right after the Hamlinian Civil War, during a time where Hamlin was under intense scrutiny after the Hamlingate incident, and in turn, many people were looking for the alternative to Hamlin. On December 14, 2011, that person came when Chairman of the Hamlinian Communist Party and President of the Former People's Republic of the Oasis Islands Phil Heisner went into the race in an attempt to bring the party to power. After a rise in the polls, a Coalition Against Terrorist States Tribunal stripped Heisner of his ability to run in the race. Later that month, Vice President of the Hamlinian Republic Daniel Stefanko announced his campaign in an attempt to beat Hamlin in a rematch from the 2011 Elections. In January,

Hamlin switched his party affiliation to the Hamlinian Libertarian Party in a possible attempt to avoid losing the Empire Party's nomination. On April 8, 2012, former Prime Minister of Starland and new Hamlinian citizen Nik Hart created the Hamlinian Social Liberal Party and announced his candidacy. On May 15, 2012, in a surprise announcement, Hamlin suspended his campaign and became Stefanko's running mate, ending an era for Hamlinian politics.

On June 2, 2012, MicroWiki community members took to the ballot box and voted in the election. Nik Hart came out as the decisive victor, getting 6 votes to Daniel Stefanko's 1 vote. Since each vote only held half weight, Hart ended the night with 3 votes compared to Stefanko's 1. On June 27, the Hamlinian Senate passed a bill put forward by Stefanko that would move the election up to two weeks after the motion carried. The motion was approved and carried by Speaker Hamlin on June 28, making the election on July 12, 2012. This will also move the inauguration up to late July, thus cutting Hamlin's second and final term short, although Hamlin gave no signs of dismay, as he co-sponsored and failed to veto the bill.

On July 12, 2012, voters took to the polls. The first three states to have their results revealed were Stefankostan, Sonoristan and Hamlinistan respectively. Stefanko took Stefankostan and Hart took Hamlinistan and Sonoristan. The two-state wins would be the end of Hart's winning streak as Stefanko would go on to take Hamlinia, which tied the candidates at 6 each. The Oasis Islands served as the tiebreaker, which Stefanko won three votes to one vote. Stefanko was declared President-Elect at 1:24 pm Eastern Daylight Time, with authenticated results yet to come out.
