The Leader of the Official Opposition, commonly known as the Leader of the Opposition or the Opposition Leader, is a parliamentary office in the Kingdom of Fatrea. The lead the Official Opposition. The officeholder is seen as a shadow head of government, and as a result a shadow Prime Minister of Fatrea.

Because of their role as a shadow prime minister, the opposition leader is ex officio a member of the privy council. As well as this, they lead the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet - which scrutinises the actions of the cabinet and offers alternative policies.

The office is currently vacant.

History

The office of leader of the opposition was established on 15 February 2024. It was established by convention, instead of by the constitution. The office was established as part of the formation of the Parliament of Fatrea, to effectively conduct the role to scrutinise the government.

Role

The role of the leader of the opposition includes:

  • Chairing the Shadow Cabinet
  • Leading their Party in Parliament
  • Co-Ordinating Actions of the Official Opposition
  • Suggesting Alternative Policies to that of the Prime Minister

As the opposition leader is also usually a member of parliament, they can propose and vote on bills. As a result of this, they oversee their party in parliament and have other duties leading their party. They also engage in debate with members of the government in parliament during select question times.

Appointment

Unlike ministers of the crown, the opposition leader is not directly appointed by the monarch. However, the opposition leader is appointed indirectly by the monarch, through the choice of prime minister. The opposition leader automatically takes the office when the prime minister is appointed, as the opposition leader is the leader of the largest political group in parliament that is not in government.
