The monarchy of Sarum, commonly referred to as the Saruit monarchy, is the constitutional monarchy of Sarum. The current monarch and head of state, Alexander, created, and ascended to the throne upon Saruit independence from the Nortonian Republic on 16 January 2024.

The monarch and royal family undertake various official, ceremonial, diplomatic and representational duties. As the monarchy is constitutional, the monarch is limited to non-partisan functions such as bestowing honours and appointing the Prime Minister. The monarch is commander-in-chief of the Royal Saruit Armed Forces, however, the day to day running of the military is delegated to the State Holder of Sarum and the Minister of Defence. Though the ultimate formal executive authority over the government of Sarum is still by and through the monarch's royal prerogative, these powers may only be used according to laws enacted in Parliament and, in practice, within the constraints of convention and precedent.

The monarchy of Sarum has many of it's origins in the former monarchy of the Kingdom of Norton (which included Sarum), with Alexander previously reigning as the popular King of the Nortonians until the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Nortonian Republic in July 2023. Alexander was offered the throne of Sarum following it's declaration of independence from the Nortonian Republic and it's choice to adopt a constitutional monarchy.

Constitutional role

Appointment of the prime minister

Whenever necessary, the monarch is responsible for appointing a new prime minister (who by convention appoints and may dismiss every other Minister of the Crown, and thereby constitutes and controls the government). In accordance with constitutional conventions, the sovereign must appoint an individual who commands the support of Parliament, usually the leader of the party or coalition that has a majority in the legislature. The prime minister takes office by attending the monarch in private audience, and after being verbally proclaimed Prime Minister by the Monarch, that appointment is immediately effective without any other formality or instrument, however, a brief statement is usually released by the Monarch confirming the appointment.

Succession laws

The successor of the throne is absolute primogeniture, where elder children, regardless of sex, will inherit before younger. The line of succession is directly from Prince Donald, Duke of Perrott, and as of January 2024, will pass to the King's only sibling, Prince Louis, Earl of Lindenrouge. The current line of succession is listed below:

  • (6) Donald, Duke of Perrott
    • (3) Justine of Perrott
  • (2) Aynsley, Duchess of Clernau
    • Alexander
    • (1) Louis, Earl of Lindenrouge
  • (4) Benoît, Earl of Mauberg
    • (5) Sophie of Mauberg
