The Most Noble Order of the Red Lion is an order of chivalry in the Kingdom of Fatrea. Founded by King Luke I, it is the highest ranking and oldest honour in the Fatrean honours system.
Appointments are at the Sovereign's sole discretion, typically made in recognition of significant contribution to the nation, service to the Crown, or for distinguished personal service to the monarch.
History
The Order of the Red Lion was established on 19 March 2024. It is the oldest honour in the Fatrean honours system. It was created by King Luke I in efforts to establish a national honours system to be able to commend citizens for contributions to Fatrea.
Composition
Members
Membership of the order is at the sole discretion of and includes the monarch. The monarch is known as the Sovereign of the Red Lion. Nominations are sometimes accepted from the government, but only the monarch can actually appoint people to membership in the order.
Grades
The order comes in three grades:
- Royal Knight/Lady
- Stranger Knight/Lady
- Knight/Lady Companion
The grade received upon being inducted into the order is at the monarch's discretion, however tends to be based on the acts of the recipient in addition to other factors. For example, members of the Fatrean royal family are usually inducted as royal knights/ladies as well as some foreign royals. Foreign heads of state and government, as well as Fatrean citizens who make an especially notable contribution to earn the honour are received as stranger knights/ladies. Other members are inducted to the order as knight/lady companions.
Regardless of what grade members receive, all members of the order use the same post nominals and have the same privileges.
Degradation
The sovereign may degrade members of the order for taking up arms against the crown or for acts of treason. As with awarding, degrading members tends to be conducted during a short ceremony. The exact order of events of a degradation ceremony isn't officially outlined and tends to be at the discretion of the monarch.
Officers
The order currently has two officers - the sovereign and the chancellor. The sovereign is the head of the order and appoints the chancellor. The chancellor is always already a member of the order, and tends to be a peer or clergyman belonging to the order.
Privileges
Presence
Members are assigned positions in the order of precedence, coming before all others of knightly rank, and above baronets. Partners and children of members of the order are also assigned a position. The chancellor of the order is also assigned precedence.
Male members of the order are entitled to the prefix "Sir" and female members "Lady". Wives of male members may also use the prefix "Lady". These prefixes do not apply to royalty, peers and clergymen - who only use the post nominals of the order.
Male members of the order can use the post nominals KRL, and female members can use the post nominals LRL.
Heraldry
If a member of the order is granted a coat of arms by the College of Arms, they are permitted to encircle their heraldry with the order. Members of the order may also apply to the College of Arms for heraldic supporters unique to members of the order. Peers who belong to the order can add these to their heraldry with the assent of the monarch or the earl marshal directly.
