The Royal Consort of Tanaau is the spouse of the reigning King or Queen of Tanaau. Consorts of Tanaauan monarchs do not have any constitutional status or powers but tend to hold significant influence and support the sovereign in their duties.

The position of consort is currently vacant.

Style

The wife of a reigning king is styled as "Her Majesty The Queen" during her husband's reign. Upon her husband's death, she becomes known as "Her Majesty The Queen Mother" as the mother of the reigning monarch.

The husband of a reigning queen does not share the title and style of his wife. Male consorts are usually styled as "His Royal Highness The Prince Consort" and tend to hold an additional title, usually at the rank of duke.

Coronation

Queen consorts participate in coronation ceremonies and undertake many of the same ceremonies as the monarch. Queen consorts usually coronated as such alongside the monarch, but prince consorts do not usually share in this privilege.

If a king is coronated prior his wedding, his wife may be provided her own separate coronation ceremony to crown her as queen consort.

History

The royal consort is as old as the monarchy, being established on 17 November 2023. However, the consort does not have a constitutionally established position. The role is not mentioned in the constitution and has no formal powers vested in it.
