The Royal New Shropshire Navy, or RNSN, is the naval service of New Shropshire.
History
The Royal New Shropshire Navy was officially founded in 1892 with the passing of the Defence and Military Act; however, ships were commissioned in the Governor's name from 1818 onwards, initially as ships of the West Chile Company until its dissolution in 1839, then simply as ships of New Shropshire.
The ships, which were normally vessels owned by the FitzGerald family, flew New Shropshire's blue ensign (with its coat of arms, as opposed to the WCC monogram as was flown earlier).
In 1892, this was updated to a white ensign and ships were officially prefixed Her Majesty's New Shropshire Ship (HMNSS). The first ship to be commissioned as such was HMNSS Rabid Fox.
It has had a variety of ships, mostly owned by the FitzGerald family and used for merchant purposes. The last ship to be commissioned in the RNSN was HMNSS James, in 1987. There have been no other ships commissioned since; in 2003, 2 years after James' decommissioning, the Future Defence Review proposed an armed patrol vessel. This was deemed illegal by other authorities, so was cancelled.
In 2019, the Armed Forces Review proposed a sloop for ceremonial purposes. This is planned to be delivered by 2024.
Mission and Responsibility
The RNSN is theoretically tasked with patrolling New Shropshire's territorial waters and, since there is no other coastguard, lifesaving duties. Due to it being based out of the UK, however, this has not happened recently.
Its vessels are rarely armed.
Symbols
Ensigns
Commissioned ships in the RNSN fly a white ensign, which is the white derivative of the nation's flag. This follows other Commonwealth countries, originating from White Squadron in the Royal Navy's former squadron system of organisation.
Non-commissioned but government-owned ships (such as tenders and support vessels) fly the standard blue ensign. The rarely-used red ensign is reserved for merchant vessels.
Jack
All New Shropshire vessels use the same jack, which is effectively the banner-of-arms of New Shropshire.
