The Blue Huns, also called the Blue Horde or simply The Horde, officially known as The Khaganate of the Blue Huns (Gothic: 𐌺𐌰𐌲𐌰𐌽𐌹𐌽𐌰𐍃𐍃𐌿𐍃 𐌱𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌴 𐌷𐌿𐌽𐌴 Kaganinassus Blewane Hune, Arabic: حاقانة الهون الزرقاء Ḥāqānatu al-Hūni al-zaraqā'i) is a nomadic micronation with a Turco-Germanic as well as latinate culture and heritage. As a nomadic nation, the Khaganate has no permanent territorial claims, but claims sovereignty over its own movements and the territories it settles in. The Khaganate thus has no official capital, but the court of the Khagan is held at a large tent at their current residence, known as Darusalam (Arabic: دار السلام Abode of Peace). The Horde officially uses Gothic as its state language, and Gothic is the language spoken by the court at Darusalam. English and Arabic are also recognized as "working languages" of the nation, and translations of decrees and rulings are often translated to either one of the languages. The Horde officially keeps time according to the Hijri (also known as Islamic) calendar, and marks its founding as 15 Ramadan 1444, or in the Gregorian calendar, 6 April 2023.

Founded in 15 Ramadan 1444 by Suleyman ibn Ludhbirt al-Quti, also known as Khagan Suleyman I who is themselves a Muslim, as a thought experiment regarding the idea of a nomadic micronation acting in accordance with Islamic law in the modern day. The Blue Horde was founded as a spiritual successor to the nomadic empires of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, adopting their customs of nomadism and Sunni Islam. With this in mind, Khagan Suleyman administers the Blue Horde as an absolute monarchy, with Islamic Law of the Hanafi madhab as the basis of governance. However, it has been noted that there is considerable influence of Roman and Visigothic civil law in the legal code of the nation. As of Ramadan 1444, the Blue Horde lacks a formal constitution, being totally administered by the decree of the Khagan and the letter of the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah. Officially, the Blue Horde adheres to Sunni Islam, and promotes Islamic Neo-Traditionalism, promoting the Hanafi school of law, the Ash'ari creed, and Naqshbandi tariqah of Sufism as official and government sponsored institutions in the Khaganate.

Etymology

The Khaganate takes its name from The Huns, a nomadic people of Central Eurasia of late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The Huns are believed to be a people of mixed ethnicity with large Turkic, Mongolic and Iranian input. As well, the Huns would later incorporate many Germanic populations such as the Goths, Gepids, Sciri and others into their ranks, mixing with them to create a sort of Turco-Germanic culture with Roman influence. The name "Hun" itself is of uncertain origin, but one likely etymology is that it derives from an Iranian source related to the Avestan xyona "enemy, hostile". The Horde sees itself as a spiritual successor to the Huns in its nomadic nature, its Turco-Germanic and Latinate culture, and its use of the Gothic language.

The use of "blue" goes back to a naming tradition of the nomadic peoples of Eurasia, who marked cardinal directions with colors. Blue represents the East in this scheme; and as North America, where the Khaganate is based, lies far to the east of Asia, the constituent peoples of the nation were designated as the Blue Huns.

History

The Khaganate of the Blue Huns is a very young nation, being founded only on the 15th Ramadan 1444, or 6 April 2023. The nation was founded primarily as a thought experiment to see how such a nation, being primarily nomadic without formal claims to permanent tracts of land and ruled with a blend of Islamic and Romano-Gothic civil law. The nation also grew out of an extension of Khagan Suleyman I's studies of the Gothic language and culture, as well as that of the Huns, with whom he had become quite attached, seeing a similarity with his own situation as a person of Germanic and Latin heritage, and exposed heavily to Turkic culture in the surroundings while growing up. While the Horde operates as a sovereign nomadic host, it does not seek formal independence from the nation in which it resides. Islam was chosen as the state religion of the Khaganate as Khagan Suleyman I is himself a practicing Muslim, and wanted to explore the idea of governing a micronation in accordance with Islamic law. As well, many historical nomadic empires of Eurasia were adherents of Sunni Islam, so the Khagan felt that it was fitting for a nation taking inspiration and spiritual succession from the Huns to also take up Islam.

Geography

As of 1444 AH, the Khaganate is based in the Southwestern Great Lakes region of North America, a few miles inland from the shores of Lake Michigan.

Climate

The Horde experiences cold, harsh winters, hot humid summers and cool mild spring and autumn seasons. The region is an excellent area for agriculture, fishing, hunting and foraging.

Government and Politics

The Khaganate is an absolute monarchy based on feudal principles, the absolute authority within the Khaganate is the Khagan. The Khagan may not, however, instigate laws or decrees that egregiously violate Islamic law. The Council of Scholars is established in order to advise the Khagan and ensure that they rule in accordance with Islam. Shari'a courts exist to handle criminal law, however there is also a parallel system of Romano-Gothic Civil Law that exists within the Khaganate.

Culture

Demographics

The royal family of the Horde are culturally Hispanic and Germanic, with significant turkicization through outside influence. Being that the family ultimately descends from Asturias, Khagan Suleyman I claims the family to be of Gothic origins and presents them as such, as well as promoting the use of Gothic language in his court.

No official data exists as of 1444 AH of the demographics of the nation. More time will be necessary to tell.

Social Structure

The social structure of the Khaganate is largely based upon a tribal system of organization. While the Khagan reigns at the top, below the Khagan are several chiefs (Gothic: 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽𐍉𐍃) who represent a tribe (𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰). Beneath the chiefs are patriarchs (𐌺𐌹𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽𐍉𐍃) who rule over a clan (𐌺𐌿𐌽𐌹). As well, the Khaganate has a system of social division similar to that of the Ottoman Empire's millet system which divides confessional communities into different legal groupings (𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌻𐌰).

Food and Drink

Tea and coffee remain popular drinks in the Khaganate. Another favorite drink is ayran, a favorite of the Khagan which has gained popularity through his public consumption of the drink. Also gaining popularity is keffir. Alcoholic drinks are illegal for consumption in the Khaganate. Fish and rice are also common staple foods in the Khaganate due to the close proximity of the Horde to lakes and rivers.
